•Feel like binge-watching films but don’t have a lot of time? Then the 14th annual DC Shorts Film Festival may be just the ticket.
The festival, which runs from Thursday, Sept. 7, through Sunday, Sept. 17, will screen nearly 170 films — each between two and 30 minutes in length — from more than 30 countries. The films are screened in “showcases,” 90-minute presentations followed by filmmaker Q&As.
Showcase 1, presented on Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 10 at 3 p.m. at Landmark E Street Cinema, 555 11th St. NW, will feature the documentary “Prince of Smoke,” the animated film “Intruder Man,” the drama “Silent Sentinel,” the comedy “Fanny Pack” and three other films. A dozen of the showcases are thematic: all-animation, all-LGBT, etc. New this year is a free outdoor showcase on Thursday, Sept. 14, in Farragut Square at sundown.
Fifteen of the shorts are world premieres, six are North American premieres and 25 are East Coast premieres. In addition to the screenings, the festival includes filmmaker workshops, networking parties and a screenwriting competition, at which audience members will vote for their favorite of six screenplays. The author of the winning screenplay will receive a $2,000 cash prize. Preceded by a screenwriting seminar, the competition will be held Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at Miracle Theatre, 535 8th St. SE. Tickets are $15 ($20 at the door).
Admission to showcases ranges from free to $15. Tickets for the opening weekend City View Party on Friday, Sept. 8, at Rooftop @ Carroll Square, 975 F St. NW, and for the Subterranean Soiree at Dupont Underground on Saturday, Sept. 9, are $25. An All-Access Festival Pass, including admission to all showcases and parties, T-shirt and swag bag, is $150.
