‘Mr. Brexit’ Speaks at GW

Former United Kingdom Independence Party leader Nigel Farage was at George Washington University on July 23, encouraging young conservatives to be “happy warriors.”

The British politician and radio host — known as “Mr. Brexit” for being the face of criticism of the European Union — was given a hero’s welcome at Turning Point USA’s High School Leadership Summit.

“Liberals shouldn’t be seen as having all the fun,” he said, hiking up his trousers to reveal bright Union Jack socks. “For a long time, young conservatives were seen as geeks and social misfits.”

Since Brexit rocked the political establishment in 2016, Farage has been a fixture on the conservative speaker circuit and a frequent commentator on Fox News.

A friend and admirer of President Donald Trump, Farage was greeted by chants of “Nigel! Nigel!” by young attendees in MAGA hats and “I Heart Ayn Rand” buttons.

Turning Point USA was started in 2012 to train and motivate young conservatives and to condemn teachers and college professors who propagate what organizers perceive as a liberal agenda.

This year’s summit is expected to bring in a constellation of conservative stars, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Donald Trump Jr. and Silicon Valley titan Peter Thiel. Farage was preceded by United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, who received applause when she explained the U.S.’s controversial exit from the U.N. Human Rights Council.
