Weekend Round Up January 3, 2019


This weekend, you can pair Italian wines on Friday with vegan cooking on Saturday. Then take the kids to celebrate the birthday of airmail in College Park. Somm Sitdown at Via Umbria

Sommelier Will Moriarity will lead this week’s guided tasting of Italian wines on Friday, Jan. 4, at 6 p.m. at Via Umbria, 1525 Wisconsin Ave. NW. Opening Reception: ‘Faces’ Art Exhibition

Vegan Cooking Class: Chili & Cornbread

Part of a series presented by the Vegan Skillet recipe site, this class — on Saturday, Jan. 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Waterhole, 4004 34th St. in Mount Rainier, Maryland — will include a tour of Glut Food Coop, a food-prep demonstration of a plant-based meal by Danni McGhee and a tasting of the just-created meal. Volunteer at H Street Farms

Area residents are invited to volunteer at H Street Farms, the rooftop garden and education center on top of the W.S. Jenks & Son hardware store, 910 Bladensburg Road NE, on Saturday, Jan. 5, from noon to 4 p.m. (and every Saturday afternoon). Caroling at Polish Library

The Polish Library in Washington, D.C., will mark the start of carnival season with caroling featuring jazz vocalist Grazyna Auguscik on Saturday, Jan. 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Residence of the Ambassador of Poland, 3041 Whitehaven St. NW. Afternoon Aviators: The Mail

In honor of the birthday of airmail, the College Park Aviation Museum, 1985 Corporal Frank Scott Drive in College Park, Maryland, will host a program for age 6 and up about the history of mail transportation by air on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. Admission is $5. Ghosts of Georgetown Walking Tour

At this walking tour, presented by DC By Foot, participants will hear a historian’s take on the curses, eerie coincidences and hauntings that make up the darker side of days gone by in our pre-Revolutionary town. ‘Woodshock’ at Museum of Women in the Arts

On Sunday, Jan. 6, at 2:15 p.m., the National Museum of Women in the Arts, 1250 New York Ave. NW, will present a free screening of “Woodshock,” the feature film debut of fashion designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy, founders of Rodarte. Kirsten Dunst stars as a woman torn between her fractured emotional state and the reality-altering effects of a potent cannabinoid drug. Twelfth Night Concert by the City Choir

Guest conductor Gretchen Kuhrmann will lead a performance by the City Choir of Washington on Sunday, Jan. 6, at 4:30 p.m. at the National Presbyterian Church, 4101 Nebraska Ave. NW. John Rutter’s Gloria will be featured, along with other Twelfth Night-related works and traditional carols. The “Partner in Song” will be the West Springfield High School Madrigals. Closing Event: ‘Glow’

One of this year’s “Glow” installations in Georgetown, “Twilight Antiques and Thrift,” is a life-scale representation of a store in the form of a glowing lantern. Lining the shelves of this translucent shop are hundreds of hand-assembled lanterns, each a reproduction of an object connected with D.C. On closing night, Sunday, Jan. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Meigs Park, M Street and Pennsylvania Avenue at 28th Street NW, visitors can select a free lantern to take home.
