Emerson Fry Trunk Show

Final Performances: ‘Falsettos’
The Lincoln Center production of William Finn and James Lapine’s Tony Award–winning 1992 musical “Falsettos” — a show both comic and painful, centering on a divorced couple, their adolescent son and the father’s boyfriend in the early years of AIDS — is wrapping up at the Kennedy Center. In “Spunk,” an adaptation of three Zora Neale Hurston stories by “Jelly’s Last Jam” writer George C. Wolfe, an unearthly Guitar Man and Blues Speak Woman tantalizingly interweave three tales of the early 20th-century African American experience. Opening Night: Chamber Dance Project
Chamber Dance Project’s sixth Washington season brings together seven dancers from leading American companies in a program at Sidney Harman Hall, 610 F St. NW, featuring world premieres by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Artistic Director Diane Coburn Bruning. Patrons on opening night, Thursday, June 20, will follow the the Mosché Brass Band to Hotel Monaco for a summer-solstice party after the 7:30 p.m. show. Evening at the Embassy of Malaysia
On Friday, June 21, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., the new ambassador and top-level diplomats will welcome guests to the Embassy of Malaysia, 3516 International Court NW, for a buffet dinner prepared by the embassy’s native chef, a performance by a Malaysian dance troupe, a short film highlighting the beauty and culture of Malaysia, a sale of Malaysian handicrafts and a sampling of local beverages, food products and the world’s smelliest fruit, the durian. D.C. Filipino Food Festival
District Pier at the Wharf, 101 District Square SW, will host “Taste the Philippines,” the D.C. Filipino Food Festival, on Saturday, June 22, from 2 to 6 p.m. In addition to Filipino cuisine from celebrated chefs, the festival will feature Filipino cultural performances, martial arts demonstrations, music, giveaways, prizes and kids’ activities. Solstice Saturday Festival at NMAI
The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Fourth Street and Independence Avenue SW, will celebrate Solstice Saturday, June 22, with an afternoon of Andean music, dance and family-friendly activities from 3 to 7 p.m., followed by a Solstice Illuminated Dance Party and an illuminated procession on the museum’s Welcome Plaza from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The galleries will remain open, with food and drink available for purchase from food trucks and the Museum’s Mitsitam Café Espresso Bar. Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ 40th Anniversary
Also on Saturday, June 22, at 8 p.m., Classic Albums Live will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s legendary and controversial 1979 concept album “The Wall” at Wolf Trap, 1551 Trap Road in Vienna, Virginia. National Capital BBQ Battle
The 27th annual Giant National Capital BBQ Battle will take place on Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, on Pennsylvania Ave. NW between 3rd and 7th Streets. Along with barbecue competitions, there will be a sampling pavilion, cooking demonstrations, cookbook signings, games for all ages and 30 bands on three stages. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. This year’s event benefits the USO of Metropolitan Washington and the Capital Area Food Bank. Artist Talk: ‘Change/Transformation’
In conjunction with the exhibition “Change/Transformation” at Waverly Street Gallery, 4600 East-West Highway in Bethesda, Maryland, there will be a free artist talk on Sunday, June 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. The works in the show, presented by the Women’s Caucus for Art of Greater Washington, reflect change witnessed and experienced by the artists themselves, and also the transformation of the role of women in the society today. Mid-Atlantic Watercolor Exhibition
On Sunday, June 23, from 2 to 4 p.m., there will be a free opening reception for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Watercolor Exhibition at BlackRock Center for the Arts, 12901 Town Commons Drive in Germantown, Maryland. The show, the annual juried exhibition of the Baltimore Watercolor Society, is the most competitive of its kind in the region.
