Shortened Wolf Trap Season
[UPDATE 5/22/20: THE SUMMER 2020 SEASON HAS BEEN CANCELED IN ITS ENTIRETY.] Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia, has canceled or postponed all shows prior to Friday, July 3, when Classic Albums Live will perform the Beatles’ “Let It Be” and the Stones’ “Let It Bleed.” The shortened summer season will continue the following week, on July 7 and 8, when legendary rocker Steve Winwood, co-founder of Traffic and Blind Faith, is scheduled to appear with Steely Dan. As of this writing, the rest of the season remains on the books.
In Series Going All-Digital
Innovative opera presenter In Series has declared itself “the first company in the world to articulate its intention to present a completely digital season” in 2020-21. The company is preparing to launch a “virtual opera-theater space” in which, instead of five or six live productions, twice or three times as much new work will be presented online, without a paywall, starting in September. Premiere evenings at movie theaters are also planned, when restrictions on public gatherings are lifted.
New Hillwood Garden Book
“A Garden for All Seasons: Marjorie Merriweather Post’s Hillwood,” by Kate Markert, executive director of Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens, was published in April. Copies of the hardcover book, featuring photographs of Hillwood’s 13 acres of formal gardens by Erik Kvalsvik, a foreword by interior designer Charlotte Moss and an afterword by Ellen Charles, Post’s granddaughter, may be ordered online from Georgetown’s Bridge Street Books at bookshop.org/shop/bridgestreetbooks.
