Tuition Cut for GU Undergrads Not Returning to Campus

•In a letter to the Georgetown University undergraduate community dated July 21, Provost Robert Groves and Senior Vice President and Chief Operations Officer Geoffrey Chatas announced reduced tuition for students who were not invited back to campus.
The letter stated that students who are not invited to return to GU’s campus for the fall 2020 semester will get a 10-percent tuition reduction. That tuition cut ends up being around $2,800, according to the Washington Post.
Further, students returning to campus will see changes to their bill due to health precautions. They will be charged the lower double-room rate for housing as opposed to a higher single rate. Also, housing and dining costs will be reduced by 20 percent due to the shorter semester length — a cut of around $2,000.
Groves also wrote: “Regardless of whether courses use in-person or virtual instruction modes, all undergraduate students will continue to receive an impactful, quality Georgetown education.”
The letter was released amid a budget crisis for U.S. colleges and universities from which Georgetown was not spared. The school announced in May that it will suspend contributions to employees’ retirement plans, put some construction on hold and initiate a voluntary furlough program. GU is reportedly entering the academic year with a $50-million deficit.
