•As we begin to turn a corner on — and away from — the global pandemic, Georgetown is seeing lots of transition in the retail and restaurant realm. Here are some of the latest business ins, outs and coming-soons to look forward to.
In: Spicez
Spice, spice baby! If you’re in need of spices, you’ll want to check out Spicez at 1610 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Georgetown’s new one-stop shop for spices, herbs and other Indian and Eastern food items. You’ll find your traditional black pepper and spiced chai, plus a section with sweets like a sweet carrot pudding and soft fried dumplings in sugar syrup. To-go Indian and Pakistani meals are also available.
Out: Café Tu-O-Tu
After 18 years in Georgetown, Café Tu-O-Tu at 2816 Pennsylvania Ave. NW has permanently closed. The eatery, near the Four Seasons, was a popular spot for coffee, wraps and sandwiches, salads and Turkish baklava. Owner Mino Sarano was known for his warm and welcoming nature. In 2018, the café saw business falter but remained hopeful. Unfortunately, it did not bounce back, particularly given the pandemic.
Coming Soon: Duly Noted
A new stationery and gift shop will open this Saturday, March 20, at 1355 Wisconsin Ave. NW. The first 50 customers who show up for Duly Noted’s socially distanced grand opening event, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., will get a goodie bag full of stationery and fun paper goods. Duly Noted will be open every day of the week.
Coming Soon: Bitty & Beau’s
There’s a new coffee shop coming to the old Calvin Klein store at 3207 M St. NW later this year. But Bitty & Beau’s is not just a coffee shop. It primarily employs individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The company is aiming for 100 franchises in the next decade, according to the Washington Business Journal. Owners Amy and Ben Wright named the shop after their children, who both have Down syndrome.
