Shooting Stirs Panic at Nats Park: Crime and Police Blotter, July 19


This weekend marked a barrage of gun violence which resulted separately in the death of a six-year-old girl and panic at Nationals Park.

Washington Nationals, Mayor Bowser Release Statement on Weekend Shooting 

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Washington Nationals Managing Principal Owner Mark D. Lerner have released a statement in the wake of the weekend shooting outside Nationals Park.

Bowser and Lerner said in the statement: “We stand together against senseless acts of gun violence in the city we love. Gun violence — no matter where it occurs in our city — is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) continues to work closely with the Nationals’ security to ensure the continued safety of residents, fans, workers and all individuals in the area.”

The game between the Nationals and San Diego Padres was suspended in the sixth inning Saturday after a shooting occurred outside the stadium, causing the sound of gunfire to echo throughout Nationals Park. The sounds caused panic and fans clamored for the dugout and concourses to hide. The shooting turned out to be an exchange of gunfire between people in two cars. The incident left three people injured. The game was finished on Sunday afternoon.

6-year-old Killed in Weekend Shootout – Vehicle of Interest Sought

Nyiah Courtney, 6, of Southeast D.C. lost her life Friday July 16 after a juvenile female, two adult females, two adult males and Courtney were found suffering sustained gunshot wounds. The victims received treatment at a local hospital. A sixth victim was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Courtney did not survive despite all life-saving efforts. A gray, four-door sedan is currently being sought as a vehicle of interest in the situation. MPD is offering a $25,000 reward for anyone who has information that can lead to a conviction.

Arrest Made in Spring Burglaries 

Linwood Lyn Massie, 59, of no fixed address was arrested and charged with four counts of burglary-two on July 15. On March 1, Massie forcibly entered an establishment in the 4200 block of Albemarle St. NW and then fled the scene. On March 12, the suspect entered an establishment at the 2200 block of P St. NW, took property then fled the scene. A month later, Massie entered an establishment in the 3100 block of P St. NW, took property and fled. Finally, on June 30, the suspect entered an establishment in the unit block of Chevy Chase Circle NW, took property and fled.

The following are incidents in and around the Georgetown neighborhood since our last print issue June 16. 

 June 16 

  • Arrest: Assault with a dangerous weapon case in the unit block of N St. NW. At 6:31 a.m., suspect wielded a gun and shot victim inside a residence. Suspect fled scene and was later arrested. Victim transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
  • Robbery: 1700 block of Connecticut Ave. NW.
  • Theft: 3300 block of Water St. NW.

June 17 

  • Arrest Made: In an assault with intent to kill offense in the 3200 block of 34th St. NW. At around 1:36 p.m., officers patrolling the area heard sound of gunshots. They witnessed four suspects brandishing weapons and shooting at victims. Suspects fled scene in a vehicle and were pursued by officers, ending the chase in the 4300 block of Chaplin St. SE. 
  • Theft: 1900 block of M St. NW. 

June 19 

  • Theft: 1200 block of Wisconsin Ave. NW.  
  • Robbery: 3500 block of Prospect St. NW. 

 June 20 

  • Suspects Sought: For a June 20 robbery (snatch) offense. At around 3:45 a.m., suspects approached the victims in the 1100 block of I St. NW. They snatched property from the victims and promptly fled scene. Suspects were caught on surveillance cameras.  
  • Theft: 3300 block of Water St. NW. 

June 21 

  • Theft: 3200 block of M St. NW.  
  • Auto Theft: 2700 block of Dumbarton St. NW. 

June 23 

  • Theft: 1400 block of Q St. NW. 
  • Vandalism: 1500 block of 20th St. NW. 

June 25 

  • Robbery: 1700 block of N St. NW. 

June 27 

  • Suspect Sought: MPD currently looking to identify and locate suspect in reference to an assault with a dangerous weapon case. Just before 10 p.m., officers from the Second District responded to the sound of gunshots from the 1200 block of Connecticut Ave. NW. Two victims were located and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect’s image was captured by surveillance camera.  
  • Theft: 2300 block of M St. NW. 
  • Shooting: 1200 block of Connecticut Ave. NW. 

June 29

  • Assault: 2100 block of P St. NW. 

July 1 

  • Suspect Sought: In reference to a burglary-two offense in the 5100 block of Wisconsin Ave. NW. At 1:53 a.m., suspect entered an establishment at the address, took property, then fled scene. His image was captured by surveillance cameras. 
  • Theft: 1000 block of 29th St. NW.  

July 2 

  • Theft:  2800 block of M St. NW. 
  • Shooting: 1700 block of N St. NW. 

July 3 

  • Vehicular Homicide: Detectives are investigating a vehicular homicide that resulted from a hit-and-run on July 3. The incident happened at the intersection of 14th and K Sts. NW. At approximately 12:54 a.m., the driver of an Acura TLX was traveling northbound and speeding along the 900 block of 14th St. NW. The vehicle drove through a red light at 14th and K Streets NW and collided with a Hyundai Elantra, traveling eastbound on K St. The Acura pushed the Hyundai northbound through the intersection, where a BMW X5 collided with the driver’s side of the Acura. The Acura, BMW and Nissan all came to a final rest in the northeast corner of the intersection. The driver and passenger of the Acura fled the scene on foot. The individual in the Hyundai was taken to a hospital for life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead the following day.
  • Theft: 3000 block of M St. NW.
  • Burglary Reported: 1700 block of New Hampshire Ave. NW.

July 4  

  • Theft: 2600 block of Connecticut Ave. NW.
