•Can you believe we’re already closing out the books on the first month of 2022? Luckily, so many interesting events grace our area this weekend. How about a chocolate and wine tasting, a tribute to Simon and Garfunkel at the National Theatre, a Tig Notaro show at the Warner Theatre, or family events at the National Children’s Museum and at Tysons Corner?
Foodies: There’s a Chocolate and Wine Event this Saturday
The Park Hyatt, Washington, D.C. is hosting an exclusive “Valrhona Chocolate and Wine” Masters of Food & Wine Event this Saturday afternoon. Paying homage to the talents of local chefs, sommeliers and artisans, the event will highlight artisanal ingredients and taste combinations. Guests will be treated to flavors from the Park Hyatt’s newly appointed Chef de Cuisine Drew Allen, Blue Duck Tavern General Manager and sommelier Joseph Cerione, pastry chef Colleen Murphy and Valrhona Executive Pastry Chef North America Guillaume Roesz. The chocolate and wine pairings include dishes like Dulcey Hazelnut Travel Cake, Pecan Praline Cremeux and Araguani Tartlet. $150/person, more information can be found here.
The Simon and Garfunkel Story: This Weekend Only
Boomers to Gen Z will love this magical musical tribute at the National Theatre this weekend only. The show is concert-style and portrays the journey of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel from the height of their career through 1970 when the legendary duo broke up. Expect to see a live band perform hits like “Mrs. Robinson,” and “Bridge over Troubled Water.” The best part of the show is the depiction of the reunion concert in Central Park in 1981. There are three shows—one Saturday evening, a Sunday matinee and a Sunday evening show. More information on tickets can be found here.
Check out a Pop-up Exhibit at the National Children’s Museum, Learn Arabic Calligraphy
The National Children’s Museum is hosting a pop-up exhibit called “Alif Ba,” which translates to “ABC Exhibition” in Arabic. The exhibit runs through February 21. Kids (recommended for ages 4+) can explore the Arabic alphabet and language. The pop-up is hosted in partnership with the non-profit Qatar Foundation. Families will love wandering through the exhibit, learning about the 28 letters that make up the Arabic alphabet. They can listen to how to properly pronounce each letter and practice writing or tracing the letters. This weekend as part of the pop-up, there will be an Arabic Calligraphy Program Saturday and Sunday. More information on the exhibit can be found here.
Say “Hello Again” to Tig Notaro
Founder of D.C.’s Bentzen Ball Comedy Festival and stand-up comedian Tig Notaro is back for a “Hello Again” show at the Warner Theatre this Friday at 7 p.m. In addition to comedy, Grammy-nominated Notaro has had success as an actress and writer. In her personal life, Notaro has battled breast cancer and often talks about the challenges of motherhood. More on the handful or so of tickets left for Notaro’s show can be found here.
Before You Hit the Ceiling, See the Sistine Chapel Like Never Before
Immersive experiences are all the rage these days (case-in-point: the Van Gogh experience in D.C. last year) and the newest one involves perhaps history’s most miraculous set of ceiling paintings: Michaelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. If you’re unable to travel to Rome to visit the official residence and Apostolic Palace of the pope in Vatican City, this unique exhibit at Tysons Corner might be just the thing for this weekend. Step virtually into this Sistine Chapel, true-to-size, hands-free and ideal for our current world as we continue to navigate the ongoing pandemic. The exhibit starts this weekend and runs through February with limited availability. More information on the show can be found here.
