•Get out and about this weekend with plenty to do from a sneak peek of The Nutcracker, a tribute to Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, new exhibits at The Phillips Collection and The National Museum of the American Indian and more. And, Happy Veterans Day tomorrow!
Ready for the holidays? Check out The Nutcracker at THEARC
This year is the return of the beloved ballet “The Nutcracker” to The Washington Ballet’s THEARC campus. The campus trains hundreds of students ages 2 through 18 in Wards 7 and 8 every year, as well as its campus in northwest D.C. The Washington Ballet is a founding partner of THEARC since 2005. The sneak peek of the Warner Theatre production will be Saturday and Sunday only. More information here.
The Congressional Chorus Presents “Homesong”
The Congressional Chorus brings its first concert of the ’22-’23 season to 945 G St. NW on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. “Homesong,” features works by U.S. immigrants and first-generation composers who draw inspiration, as well as guest poet Marjan Naderi, a young Afghan refugee. The chorus’s NorthEast Senior Singers and their Music Director George Stewart will premiere Stewart’s new arrangement of “Home” from the musical “The Wiz.” More information on tickets can be found here.
See a New Exhibit at The National Museum of the American Indian
The museum is exploring a new exhibit that examines the Indigenous commitment to the U.S. military. The exhibit begins today and will be on display through November 30 of next year. Expect to see examples of Indigenous people, from being drafted to the pursuit of employment, education to tribal traditions and treaty commitments. The exhibit is a great option for honoring Veterans Day tomorrow. More information can be found here.
Catch “Both Sides Now” Before it Closes
One-time lovers turned lifelong friends Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen are celebrated at Signature Theatre through Sunday only. The cabaret style show runs 75 minutes and includes all your favorites like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Hallelujah,” and “Both Sides Now.” There’s even a signature cocktail to grab at Ali’s Bar in the Mead Lobby before you head into the theater — it’s a tasty combination of aperol, triple sec, bitters and bubbly. Grab the last few remaining tickets here.
The Phillips Collection Hosts a Special Exhibit
Now through February 12, 2023, The Phillips Collection is hosting an exhibit in collaboration with Pinacoteca Giuseppe De Nittis, the city of Barletta, Italy and the Puglia Region of Italy. The show will present the work of Giuseppe De Nittis, an Italian painter who flourished in Impressionist Paris in the 1870s and ‘80s. The exhibit, which features around 70 works, is only shown at The Phillips Collection. De Nittis’s urban scenes of Paris show a very detailed realism conveying a sophisticated city, booming with a flourishing economy. More on the exhibit can be found here.
Honor Those Who Served this Veterans Day
As we are the Nation’s Capital, there are many options on where to honor those who served in the military this Veterans Day (which is tomorrow, by the way). The 69th Annual National Veterans Day Observance is at Arlington National Cemetery Friday at 11 a.m. with a prelude by the U.S. Navy Band and Sea Chanters at 10:30 a.m. The Korean War Memorial will host a Veterans Day Ceremony and Wreath Presentation from 10-11 a.m. Friday morning. Since this year marks the 40th anniversary of the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, there will be an observance at The Wall from 1-3 p.m., Friday. The World War II Memorial will have a ceremony from 9-9:30 a.m. Friday morning and Fort Belvoir in Virginia is planning on a weekend of events beginning today. More information on these events can be found here (scroll down to “Washington, D.C. and Environs”).
