InSeries Gala: International Bel Canto Star Brownlee Celebrated

Theater that Sings.” — celebrated in great style at its recent black-tie gala at Planet Word at 925 13th St NW as it presented the inaugural Denyce Graves Award to renowned tenor Lawrence Brownlee. The New York Times has hailed the tenor who has used his voice for activism and diversity in industry, as “an international star in the bel canto operatic repertory.”
Guests enjoyed a private viewing in the fascinating new museum and enjoyed signature cocktails, an elegant three-course seated dinner catered by Spilled Milk Catering.
IN Series is the standard-bearer for innovative opera theater in Washington, D.C. Working with local artists and diverse communities worldwide to create novel works grounded in opera and song, The company challenges and reimagines these forms, folding in an expanding range of aesthetic and cultural traditions.
Founded by Carla Hübner in 1982 as a concert series of the former Mount Vernon College, “The In Series” became an independent non-profit arts organization in 2000 and has been a resident company at the Source Theater since 2008. Timothy Nelson, a speaker in our Cultural Leadership Breakfast series in 2022, became Artistic Director in 2018, quickly establishing the newly rebranded “IN Series” to disrupt expectations nourish empathy, stimulate insight and deepen the conversation.
IN Series closed out the current season in Washington with “CHUCK & EVA, songs from The Other Side” with two performances at the True Reformer Building on U Street and will repeat the performance in Baltimore on June 24.
