Weekend Roundup, Nov. 9 – 12


This weekend, we honor the nation’s veterans for Veterans Day on Saturday. New exhibits are at the Rubell Museum and “Defining Courage” has come to the Kennedy Center. It’s also the last weekend to see “Air Play” at The Strathmore and Washington Bach Consort’s rendition of Bach’s Motets. 

Don’t Miss the Washington Bach Consort’s “Bach’s Motets: The Singer’s Favorite!”  

Sunday afternoon at National Presbyterian Church, enjoy Washington Bach Consort’s performance of Bach’s motets. The motets weave together a beautiful mix of text, music and faith. More information on tickets can be found here.

Learn How Northern Free Black Families Fared in Their Daily Lives 

Saturday at noon at the Oprah Winfrey Theater at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, learn about the experiences of northern free Black families and how they fared in their daily lives when family answered the military call of duty. The lecture will be led by Holly A. Pinheiro, Jr., who will show how military experiences were not uniform and how race and class differed among 79,000 Black men who served in the northern U.S. Colored Troops regiments. Last Chance to See “Air Play” at The Strathmore 

Don’t miss the circus-style show “Air Play” featuring juggling, acrobatics, silent comedy and puppets. The last performances this weekend are Saturday at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. The whole family will enjoy the whimsical show which includes flying umbrellas, soaring fabrics flying over the audience, and even snow makes its debut. The National Museum of the American Indian Honors Native Veterans 

Honor the service of Native Americans on Veterans Day. The National Museum of the American Indian will be hosting the event, which will include a wreath-laying ceremony and presentation of colors by the Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society. More information on the event can be found here.

Two New Exhibits Make their Way to the Rubell Museum 

Two new art exhibits are on display at The Rubell Museum. Don’t miss “Singular Views: 25 Artists,” which highlights the work of 25 contemporary artists from across the country and world, and “Alexandre Diop: Jooba Jubba, l’Art du Defi, The Art of Challenge,” which showcases work created by the artist during his 2022 residency at the museum. See “Defining Courage,” a Live Show at The Kennedy Center 

Explore the legacy of the Nisei Soldiers of World War II at a live show Saturday at 4 p.m. In the immersive DocuTheatre experience, enjoy incredible cinematography and eyewitness interviews set to live music. The heroes featured are often overlooked, so the show is a wonderful reminder of their inner strength and inspiration. More information on tickets can be found here.
