The final score of Super Bowl LIX was as unexpected as Taylor Swift getting booed on the Jumbotron. The biggest story of the night was the unexpected final score—the Philadelphia Eagles won by almost 20 points versus the favorite Kansas City Chiefs, 40-22.
Mahomes, Kelce Underperform
Alas, the Kansas City Chiefs were unable to “three-peat,” a feat that has not been accomplished by any NFL team yet. Last night, the Chiefs seemed unenergized, uninspired and quite frankly, a unorganized mess.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was sacked multiple times, threw multiple interceptions and at halftime, his Chiefs were trailing 24-0, the second biggest lead in Super Bowl history. Tight end Travis Kelce (aka Taylor Swift’s boyfriend) was held to just four receptions for 39 yards. Now, rumors of the 35-year-old’s potential retirement are swirling.
The Eagles Wanted It—and You Could Tell
Well the Chiefs were just meh, the Eagles were fired up, excited and as viewers saw, having so much fun. There were way more Eagles fans at the event, as the ubiquitous “E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!” cheer was heard clearly throughout the broadcast. Also, when shown on the Jumbotron, Taylor Swift was booed by the sea of Eagles fans in attendance. She gave some side-eye, and her friend Serena Williams later posted on X she loved Taylor and “don’t listen to those boos!”
Speaking of Serena Williams…
Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show featured the tennis star, who used to date Drake, who is in an ongoing feud with Lamar. She danced while Lamar performed “Not Like Us.”
Lamar’s 15-minute set featured actor Samuel L. Jackson in an Uncle Sam costume and songs from Lamar’s latest album “GNX,” and some older songs too, all back by dancers dressed in red, white and blue.
Lamar’s set was fresh off his five Grammy win for “Not Like Us,” including Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance and Song of the Year.
Many praised Lamar’s decision to use the platform he had (with President Trump in attendance) to call out the country’s history of racism. His performance also included symbolism about the U.S. and our country’s government.

The Commercials Just Aren’t as Fun Anymore
Since the advent of streaming services and the fast pace of the internet, Super Bowl commercials are often teased or leaked altogether before the big unveiling. This happened for many commercials this year. Some favorites though included a reunion of Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, who reenacted their famous “When Harry Met Sally” deli scene for a Hellman’s Mayonnaise commercial (with a Sydney Sweeney cameo!). Another fun one involved musician Post Malone and comedian Shane Gillis for Bud Light as “Big Men on the Cul-de-Sac.”
