Exploring the craze for Chinese porcelain that took the West by storm in the nineteenth century, the exhibition joins Chinese blue-and-white ceramics from the museum’s collection with monumental installations by contemporary sculptor Walter McConnell, as well as 3D-printed replicas of ancient porcelain masterpieces. The evening includes tours led by the artist and curator, 3D-printing demonstrations and an opportunity to create your own stop-motion videos and screen-printed tote bags using Chinese porcelain motifs. Across the street from the Sackler, food will be available from 4 to 7 p.m. through the USDA Farmer’s Market at Night, which hosts over 20 of our city’s most popular food trucks.

WSC Avant Bard presents a riotous new comedy by Mario Baldessari and Tyler Herman and directed by Herman. When a Commedia dell’Arte theater troupe in 17th-century France is bedeviled by a royal decree forbidding them from speaking onstage, the rambunctious actors stage an ingenious revolt. Taking a flying leap off historical fact, “The Good Devil” is a hilarious spoof on art and censorship. Performances continue through the following weekend.

In a now-treasured work of the nascent Hollywood horror genre of the 1930s, a young woman (Madge Bellamy) is yanked from her wedding feast and relegated to the ranks of the Haitian undead by a voodoo master (Béla Lugosi). Writes Scott MacQueen: “Quickly produced on the cheap to exploit the post-Dracula horror cycle, White Zombie [Victor Halperin, 1932, 68 minutes] is a fairy tale in mufti, pegged to a jazz-age voodoo vogue popularized by William Seabrook’s occult writings.” For “The Crime of Dr. Crespi” [John H. Auer, 1935, 63 minutes], inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Premature Burial,” Austrian émigré Erich von Stroheim was summoned to New York to portray a tormented mad scientist who has lost his wife to another man.
