‘A Day Without Immigrants’ in Washington, D.C. (photos)

•Washington, D.C., is experiencing “A Day Without Immigrants” today, Feb. 16, as a number of city restaurants and bars closed (see list below), calling attention to the importance of the nation’s immigrant workforce. News circulated on social media urging immigrants to skip work and school and refrain from shopping as an act of mass defiance to President Donald Trump’s harsh immigration rhetoric and actions. Restaurant closures and demonstrations also took place in New York, Los Angeles and other cities.
The day was punctuated with a march from the Mount Pleasant neighborhood to the John A. Wilson District Building on Pennsylvania Avenue NW (two blocks from the Trump International Hotel), before concluding at the White House to demand an end to the administration’s aggressive deportation program and plans to build a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico. Mayor Muriel Bowser has affirmed that the District will remain a “sanctuary city” despite a presidential executive order threatening to withhold federal funds from cities that decline to help in rounding up and deporting people.
Below is a list of restaurants that are closed or offering limited service today from an article in the Washington Post (the majority of comments posted online by readers were far from supportive of the protests).
