Irish Heritage Steps Out at D.C.’s St. Patrick’s Parade (photos)

Green was the thing at the 48th annual St. Patrick’s Parade of Washington, D.C., held Sunday, March 11, along Constitution Avenue. The popular event, always the Sunday before St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, featured floats, marching bands, Irish step dancers and antique fire engines. It has been a festive fixture of the D.C. calendar since 1971.

The parade commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. While not a public holiday, St. Patrick’s Day is widely recognized as a celebration of Irish culture and heritage.
