Saluting Fallen Officers During Police Week (photos)

Law enforcement officers from around the world assembled in Washington, D.C., during mid-May for Police Week, accompanied by the families and friends of fellow officers killed in the line of duty. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.
Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
In conjunction with Police Week, it was announced that the new National Law Enforcement Museum, located in Judiciary Square across from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, will open its doors with a ceremony on Oct. 11. The “nation’s only museum that explores nearly every facet of American law enforcement” will provide visitors with a “walk in the shoes” experience. The Museum will boast a collection of more than 21,000 artifacts from every era of American law enforcement.
