Portrait Gallery Displays Bernstein Photo on 100th Birthday (video)

The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, 8th and F Streets NW, is recognizing the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer and pianist Leonard Bernstein (Aug. 25, 1918 – Oct. 14, 1990) by displaying a special portrait from Aug. 23 through Sept. 23.
According to museum notes, “the photograph shows Bernstein exhibiting his electrifying conducting style, as captured by the French humanist photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004) during a rehearsal at Carnegie Hall. Taken in 1960, this candid image reveals Bernstein’s hallmark dynamism.”
The photo, a promised gift to the museum from Daniel Greenberg and Susan Steinhauser, is on view in the Gallery’s “Celebrate” space on the first floor, near the G Street entrance. Admission is free.
