And the Winner Is … Tracy’s Kids

As wife of Vice President Mike Pence, Karen Pence is a prize guest at A List parties.

But what’s her “most favorite event of the year”?

The Oscars-themed “And the Winner Is,” which raises money for Tracy’s Kids, a charity providing art therapists to children with terminal illnesses and their families. Pence, a painter, has used her tenure as second lady to bring attention to art therapy programs.

At the Feb. 26 event at Lucky Strikes in Chinatown, she spoke of recent scientific research proving the healing effects of music, painting and arts and crafts for a person suffering from cancer or traumatic stress.

Pence was introduced by her friend Marcelle Leahy, wife of Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), who has served on the board of Tracy’s Kids since its inception in 1991 at Georgetown University Hospital by Tracy Councill, the charity’s namesake. Leahy acknowledged that her husband and the vice president don’t see eye to eye on politics, but that hasn’t stopped the two wives from bonding over their shared passion for helping children.

After the reception, which also included Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), guests were treated to screenings of Academy Award nominated films at Regal Cinemas Gallery Place.
