Canal Road Repairs May Continue All Week

The District Department of Transportation will continue the temporary closure of Canal Road NW between Reservoir Road and Foxhall Street, possibly through the end of this week, to complete emergency repairs to the roadway, the agency reported.

On July 8, the District experienced heavy rains and flash flooding. To allow floodwaters to recede, portions of Canal Road NW were closed. Additional structural damage — a sinkhole — from the flooding event created a hazard for residents and commuters, causing the road to be closed again on July 10.

After a full inspection of the roadway, DDOT determined that emergency repairs are necessary and will take approximately one week to complete. Additional work may be necessary for the long-term stability of the roadway. DDOT will notify the community as new information on potential road closures is available. Motorists will be shown detours.
