Auction Block: $2.4 Million Vase; Top Dollars for Painting, Watch

We’re back for another auction block. This month, Doyle sold a vase that topped millions. The Potomack Company and Sotheby’s boasted paintings that did well and Hindman and Christie’s auctioned gorgeous pieces of jewelry.

Doyle

A Sarah Belk Gambrell Falangcai vase sold for $2.45 million. A rare, important vase from the reign of Chinese emperor Qianlong highlighted Doyle’s Asian Works of Art Auction on Sept. 20. The auction total topped $4.3 million, which is more than double the pre-sale estimate of $1.1 to $1.8 million. Visitors from around the world competed via phone to snag the vase with a pre-sale estimate of $100,000 to $300,000.

The Potomack Company

An abstract mixed media on canvas, framed and signed by Peruvian and Colombian artist Armando Villegas (1926-2013) was sold for $1,300 after being estimated to be around $300 – $500. The piece of art was property of John Roy Oleson, a career diplomat, and his wife Mary Russell Oleson, who obtained the art when stationed in Europe, South American and Egypt in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s.

Hindman

A vintage stainless steel Rolex “Oysterdate” wristwatch, circa 1969, sold for $3,125 after being estimated to be around $800 – $1,200. The watch boasts a blue dial, applied gold baton numerals, date aperture at 3 o’clock with magnifier in crystal and a center sweep seconds hand with 17-jewel manual wind movement. The watch was property of the Collection of Rich Salerno of Glenview, Illinois.

Sotheby’s

A painting signed by the artist H. Claude Pissarro, born in 1935, was sold for $21,420 (originally estimated $10,000 – $12,000). The painting is property from a private collection and is oil on canvas and in excellent condition.

Christie’s

A spectacular pair of sapphire and diamond earrings sold for $30,000 after being estimated at $7,000 – $10,000. The lot, property of a private individual, includes square emerald-cut sapphires of 9.01 and 8.44 carats and square and round diamonds (2 square-cut and approximately 156 round, with a total weight of 1.32 carats).
