Dedi Liem Gunawan (1973 – 2021)

Washington, D.C. resident Dedi Gunawan passed away earlier this month at just 47 years of age. Gunawan was well-known in D.C. society, as he served on the board of directors for the contemporary dance troupe The Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company.

Gunawan also kept a home in Bali for years, serving as part of the KabaKaba Opera Society, a group that met to enjoy recordings of international opera performances.

He loved to entertain and be entertained—the more lavish and fun a party was, the better. He enjoyed sipping champagne at said parties and sharing his latest finds in the world of bubbly with friends and acquaintances alike.

Gunawan will be greatly missed by Dr. Wayne Hickory, DDS and his Great Dane Chouko Dai, who both lovingly lived with Gunawan.

Hundreds of mourners have visited Gunawan’s public Facebook page, leaving their condolences for the larger-than-life personality. One of Gunawan’s last posts was a photo of him with Chouko Dai and it simply said: “In a world full of people who couldn’t care less, be someone who couldn’t care more. Have a great day, dear friends! Love, love and always love.”

A celebration of Gunawan’s life will be this Saturday December 4 at Joseph Gawler’s Sons Funeral Home at 5130 Wisconsin Ave. NW. A remembrance ceremony will be held from 4 – 5 p.m. followed by a reception from 5 – 7 p.m.

The ceremony and reception are no longer accepting guests due to space restrictions. Those who wish to leave their love for Gunawan are welcome to do so at: https://www.facebook.com/dedichop
