Citizens’ Fall Picnic Concert at Rose Park Fun, Balmy

On an almost balmy Sunday evening, Sept. 18, more than 200 Georgetown residents, families and friends along with many pets, gathered on the now fully established green lawn around Rose Park’s baseball field near 26th and O Streets NW, to enjoy picnics, games, food trucks — and most especially the vibrant country music of the Walkaways.

“It’s the favorite band of the Concert in the Park, sponsored annually – except for a pandemic pause – by the Citizens Association of Georgetown,” CAG board member and event organizer Jennifer Romm told The Georgetowner. The guitarists, singers and one fiddler  — who are all professional lawyers and the like at their day jobs — are popular at community events throughout the region, Romm added. The band says this Rose Park event is one of their favorite venues.  “During the pandemic they played at various neighborhoods on Friday nights to lighten up the shutdown,” said Mona Rook, one of the winners of the CAG raffle.

Raffle gifts this year were put together by CAG member Anne Fisher. She filled two large canvas and wicker picnic tote bags with plaid waterproof picnic blankets, bottles of French sparkling wine and place settings for two as well as many tasty picnic items. They were given away in a drawing announced by some of CAG’s youngest members.

The weather was perfect for this year’s event, CAG board members agreed. The Citizens group is now gearing up for its new member drive and annual fall party to be held Oct. 22 at the Ukraine house in Kalorama.
