Please Donate: Mt. Zion Church Sacred Places $100,000 Grant Match Campaign Ends March 31

We would like to share a message from Rev. Selena Johnson and the Sacred Places Team of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church at 1334 29th St. NW in Georgetown.

“God has blessed Mt. Zion mightily in that the church was selected in Oct 2021 by the National Fund for Sacred Places as one of 15 sacred places nationwide to join this highly competitive program. Sacred Places is a fund for building restoration. Mt. Zion’s induction into the program confirms its historic significance and the important role its over 200-year heritage plays not only in Georgetown and D.C., but also nationally. Mt. Zion was awarded a matching grant of $100,000. In response, the church has launched the “Mt. Zion Historic Preservation Capital Campaign” to raise $100,000 to match the Fund’s grant for this Phase 1 of the campaign.

“Here is a brief summary of the history: In 1816, in a bold move of faith, 125 free and enslaved African Americans left the Montgomery Street church in Georgetown due to discrimination to form their own congregation. Since inception, Mt. Zion UMC has historically been a hub of black self-determination, cultural and civic life, achievement, and social justice in the nation’s capital. The current building was constructed by the hands of Rev. Alexander Dennis and other skilled black carpenters after the first edifice burned down. The property was purchased by Alfred Pope, a formerly enslaved person who became a prominent Georgetown businessman and trustee chair of the church. Mt. Zion aims to continue the great legacy and prominence and also to advocate for remembering black Georgetown.

“At this time, we have already collected $56,000! Our goal is to raise the remainder of the funds by the end of March 2023. We invite you to be a partner in this amazing capital campaign to match and surpass the grant funding by donating. … You can also go to our website, mtzionumcdc.org, and click on the “Sacred Places” tab. … Fill in the information. Under the “I would like this donation to be used for” tab there is a pull down menu. Select ”Sacred Places.”  If you are sending a check or using CashApp, please put ”Sacred Places” in the notes and be sure your address is in the notes as well.  Would you please share this great news with your friends as well

“Thank you in advance for your generosity. May God richly bless you in return!”
