May 18 Cultural Power Breakfast: Woolly Mammoth’s Maria Goyanes

Maria Manuela Goyanes, artistic director of D.C.’s Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company since 2018, will be the featured speaker at The Georgetowner’s next Cultural Power Breakfast, on Thursday, May 18. Admission to the event, at the Four Seasons Hotel, 2800 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, is $40, payable in advance at georgetowner.com.

Prior to succeeding co-founder Howard Shalwitz at Woolly Mammoth, Goyanes spent 14 years at New York’s Public Theater, where she helped produce the initial off-Broadway runs of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” and David Byrne and Fatboy Slim’s “Here Lies Love,” among other breakout productions.

Raised in Queens by parents from the Dominican Republic and Spain, Goyanes studied at Brown University with director Oskar Eustis, going on to work with him at Trinity Rep and The Public Theater, and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel.

At the May 18 breakfast, Goyanes will talk about Woolly Mammoth’s response to the pandemic and the planning process for the company’s current and upcoming seasons.

Launched by The Georgetowner in 2014, the series — formerly known as the Cultural Leadership Breakfasts — has presented 49 insider talks by heads of area museums, theater and dance companies, performing arts venues and other arts organizations.

On May 18, doors open at 8 a.m. for a buffet breakfast; the program will follow from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
