Business Ins & Outs: Sara’s Market, Todd Snyder; Scotch & Soda

In: Sara’s Market Resurrected on Q

Vivien Tsang and John Michael Kushner, co-owners of Dent Place Market, have reopened Sara’s Market at 3008 Q St. NW which closed its doors last June — a closure many thought would be forever. However, the store now looks shiny and new, as its new owners renovated the space, inside and out.

Established in 1919, Sara’s will have much of what is offered at Dent Place Market: “Great wine, local craft beer, innovative snacks, fresh pastries, Bullfrog Bagels and drip coffee — along with Mount Desert Island ice cream and other gourmet items.” Sara’s will also expand into coffee and sandwiches.

For now, the store is having a soft opening — afternoon hours only. But as staffing firms up and other work is complete, the store will open fully in the next month or so, says Tsang, adding, “Everything is organic.”

And, yes, due to popular demand, dry cleaning services remain and will be available at the store. Thank you, Vivien and John Michael, for honoring Georgetown history.

In: Todd Snyder Fashions on M

Todd Snyder, a New York City-based chain of men’s clothing stores, has opened at 3211 M St. NW, succeeding Billy Reid, which operated there from 2013 until the pandemic hit. The property was occupied by Pizzeria Uno from 1981 through 2012.

Owned by American Eagle Outfitters, Todd Snyder calls itself “the ultimate menswear destination” — and includes, “From bespoke tailoring to innovative capsule collections, Todd Snyder’s menswear ensures that good style is always within reach. Shop exclusive, limited-edition collaborations with heritage brands like Champion, New Balance, Timex, Moscot, FootJoy and more.”

Originally from Iowa, Snyder has been called “the most influential menswear designer of his generation” by Gentleman’s Quarterly. Welcome to Georgetown, Mr. Snyder.

Coming: Mugsy on M St.

Ready for summer? Mugsy is. No, not the basketball player — but the super smooth jeans maker, coming to 2922 M St. NW, where Keith Lippert once had a shop. Made with high-tech fabrics, Mugsy sells, it tells us, “the most comfortable men’s jeans ever,” and adds, “Infused with buttery softness and insane stretch, Mugsys are stylish jeans that feel like sweatpants.”

Soon: Wingo’s First Roost Returning

Work continues at Wingo’s chicken shack at 3207 O St. NW — finally flying back to its original coop after a fire shut it down in 2018.

Out: Scotch & Soda … Quickly

The Scotch & Soda clothing store — which returned to Georgetown on March 31, at 1214 Wisconsin Ave. NW, next to El Centro — has closed abruptly. Says the company: “Born in Amsterdam, our men, women and kids’ collections are the ultimate expressions of creative freedom. From eclectic statements to richly detailed essentials, we unite original design with clever functionality to bring you a modern, versatile wardrobe that lasts.” The company boasts 224 stores. There’s one in Union Market.
