Weekend Roundup: July 27-30


We’re back for another weekend roundup with lots to do, including the Mubadala Citi Open, a play at Atlas Performing Arts Center, and a weekend celebrating kids at Franklin Park in Downtown D.C.

Tennis Fans: The Mubadala Citi D.C. Open Begins Saturday

Running Saturday through Aug. 6, enjoy the Mubadala Citi D.C. Open with 11 different on-court sessions featuring tennis greats like Andy Murray, Nick Kyrgios, and D.C. native Frances Tiafo. Foodies will appreciate culinary options from Michelin-starred chefs like José Andrés, Michael Mina, and others. Take the kids this Saturday for a Kids’ Day, with tennis drills, face painting, and more. More information on the event can be found here.

Monsters of the American Cinema at Atlas Performing Arts

Monsters of the American Cinema is currently playing at Atlas Performing Arts Center.

Now through August 6, Prologue Theatre at the Atlas Performing Arts Center presents a new play about how monster movies can mean more than just cheap thrills. The play tells the tale of Remy, a Black widower whose husband left him a drive-in movie theater and a straight, white teen son named Pup. One thing that unites Remy and Pup is their love of classic monster movies. More information on the play can be found here.

Enjoy Heurich House Museum’s “Kids in the Castle: Story & Craft Hour”

Saturday from 2-3 p.m., enjoy story time and craft led by KAMA DC, a volunteer organization dedicated to promoting cultural exchange and celebrating the skills and stories of D.C.-area immigrants. After the story and craft making, families are invited to meet and support local immigrants at the second annual KAMA x Heurich Immigrant-Owned Mini Markt from 3-7 p.m. More information can be found here.

Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Launches Podcast

The Air and Space Museum has launched an “AeroEspacial” podcast, a limited series of its “AirSpace” podcast that focuses on stories of Latino history and culture at the heart of aviation and space. The four-part series is published in both English and Spanish. The first episode aired July 13 and another one is out today. Today’s episode examines Arecibo Observatory, the pride of Puerto Rico’s science community. The episode explores the science, history and social importance of the observatory in the wake of a collapse of a radio telescope. More information on the podcast can be found here.

Visit Downtown D.C. for the First “Kids’ World” at Franklin Park

Kids’ World will be at Franklin Park in Downtown D.C. this weekend.

This Friday through Sunday, enjoy a weekend that’s free and open to the public celebrating kids. There will be creative pop-ups, installations, and hands-on activities to entertain youth who attend. Expect to dive into the world of literacy, health and fitness, creativity, science, nature, and entrepreneurship. More information on the event can be found here.

Don’t miss Innastate at the National Museum of the American Indian.
