•After a long autumn of reruns due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, television is returning in full force this winter. Here’s a preview with some noteworthy comebacks.
Feud: Capote vs. The Swans
FX, debuts January 31
Based on the book Capote’s Women by Laurence Leamer, this delightfully dishy series touches on famed author Truman Capote and his “swans,” aka the wealthy women with whom he surrounded himself. Calista Flockhart stars as Lee Radziwill (Jackie O.’s younger sister) and Naomi Watts is magazine editor Babe Paley. Tom Hollander takes on the role of Truman Capote. To learn more about Lerner and his latest book ”Hitchcock’s Blondes,” we interviewed him in October 2023. You can find that story here. Also, if you want to watch season one of “Feud” starring Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon as Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, it’s available on Hulu.
Abbott Elementary
ABC, returns February 4
The popular ABC sitcom about a group of Philadelphia public school teachers is back February 4. The show resonated with teachers across the nation who’ve dealt with similar issues as those on the show, including the pros and cons of charter schools, underfunding, and work and personal life balance.
Ghosts
CBS, returns February 15
The show adapted from the British version about a couple who moves into a dilapidated old mansion is back for a shortened 10-episode season. The ensemble cast clearly has a delightful time together, and it shows during the 30-minute sitcom-style episodes. A favorite character of mine is the Viking ghost Thorfinn, after whom my husband and I named our Frenchie Thor!
Awards Shows:
Emmys
January 15 on Fox
The Emmys typically air in September, but due to the strikes the broadcast ceremony will be January 15 on Fox. The 75th annual ceremony will honor TV programming that debuted or aired from June 1, 2022 through May 31, 2023.
Grammys
February 4 on CBS
The 66th annual awards will air February 4. Of course, after the year she’s had, Taylor Swift will be the one to beat.
Oscars
March 10 on ABC
The 96th Annual Academy Awards will be broadcast live the evening of March 10. It will be another Barbie vs. Oppenheimer event, with Ryan Gosling the favorite to take home the award for Best Supporting Actor for his take on the dim-witted yet likable Ken.
