Crime Report: Suicide, Arrests for Break-ins, Illegal Handguns


Dead Body Near G.U. Campus  

On March 1, a dead body was found near Georgetown University, south of the Village A apartment complex at 3773 Prospect St. NW. The individual was found deceased at 4:55 a.m., and officials do not suspect foul play,” said the university, which added that “the person found deceased was not affiliated with the school.”  

The Metropolitan Police Department later determined the incident to be a suicide.  

2 Arrested in Break-In of SUV Used by Naomi Biden  

A man and a 14-year-old were arrested in connection with a November break-in of a Secret Service vehicle used by President Biden’s granddaughter which was parked outside a Georgetown residence, according to authorities and court documents, the Washington Post reported last month.

The Post added: “A Secret Service agent fired at a getaway vehicle that nearly hit the agent during the incident the night of Nov. 12, according to authorities and an arrest affidavit. No one was struck.

“Court documents say the Secret Service vehicle was used by members of the president’s family. A law enforcement official said it was for Naomi Biden, Biden’s adult granddaughter.

“The arrests of 19-year-old Robert Kemp and the youth came after authorities said a D.C. police officer found the getaway car, a stolen red Toyota Corolla, abandoned in 16th Street Heights. Inside it were items taken from the Secret Service vehicle, including a protective vest, night-vision goggles, a first aid bag and a computer router. Authorities also found a McDonald’s bag and food receipt; the affidavit says fingerprints on the items led them to the arrests.”  

The following is a selection of recent crime reports and safety alerts from the Metropolitan Police Department. 

 

Arrest for Illegal Handgun 

On Saturday, March 9, at approximately 1:00 am, Officers were on routine Patrol in the 1200 block of Connecticut Ave NW, when they were flagged down in reference to a subject with a gun. Second District officers stopped the subject and an illegal handgun was recovered. One male subject was placed under arrest.  

 

Man Arrested for Establishment Robberies  

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District announce a man has been arrested for three establishment robberies that occurred in Northwest.

Attempted Robbery: On Monday, March 4, at approximately 1:10 p.m., the suspect entered an establishment in the 2400 block of 18th Street, Northwest. The suspect demanded money from the employee. The employee stated that the establishment did not have money and was then able to flee the location. The suspect fled the scene without obtaining any money. CCN: 24033482

Attempted Robbery: On Monday, March 4, at approximately 1:56 p.m., the suspect entered an establishment in the 1000 block of U Street, Northwest. The suspect acted as though he had a weapon in his pocket and demanded money from the employee. The suspect left the establishment without obtaining any property. CCN: 24033494

Third District officers located the suspect, shortly after the second robbery, and placed him under arrest for the above offense. As a result of the detectives’ investigation, the suspect was also charged with the below offense.

Robbery (Fear): On Thursday, February 22, at approximately 7:50 p.m., the suspect entered an establishment in the 1800 block of 14th Street, Northwest. The suspect acted as though he had a weapon in his pocket and demanded money from the employee. The employee complied. The suspect took money from the establishment then fled the scene. The suspect has been identified as 20-year-old Isaiah Harris, of Northeast, D.C.  

   

MPD Arrests Man for Robbery  

Members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District arrested a man for a robbery after he stole the victim’s jacket.

On March 3, at approximately 5:26 p.m., Third District officers responded to the 2400 block of 18th Street, Northwest, for the report of an assault. Preliminary investigation at the scene revealed the suspect and the victims were involved in a dispute inside of an establishment. Once the involved parties went outside, the suspect assaulted the victims and sprayed them with pepper spray. The suspect took one of the victim’s jacket then fled the scene.

As a result of the investigation, detectives were able to locate the suspect and place him under arrest.  20-year-old Jaleel Smith, of Northwest, D.C., was arrested and charged with Robbery and Simple Assault.  

 

Man Arrested for Attempted Robbery  

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District announced a man has been arrested for an attempted robbery that occurred in the 2000 block of 12th Street, Northwest.

On Friday, March 1, at approximately 1:01 p.m., the suspect approached the victim and attempted to rob him. When the victim tried to flee, the suspect followed him, threatened to take his property, and assaulted him. The victim managed to get away, and the suspect was arrested by responding officers.  

On Friday, March 1, 2024, 34-year-old Kevin McLean, of Northwest, DC, was arrested and charged with Assault with Intent to Rob.  

Robbery Force and Violence   

The Second District is investigating a robbery that occurred on Thursday, January 25, at 2:00 am in the 3200 block of P Street, NW. The victim reported that he was walking towards his vehicle when he was approached by two masked suspects armed with handguns. The victim was assaulted by the suspects who demanded his property and vehicle.

Stolen was a red Honda Pilot with a Virginia Tag TRP4416, which was followed by a white Kia SUV. The suspects were described as (2) black males, wearing black ski masks, and all-black clothing, armed with black handguns.
