Crime Report: Ward 8 Council Member White Arrested for Bribery

  • Washington, D.C., residents and politicians alike were shocked this week after Ward 8 Council Member Trayon White was arrested and charged with allegedly accepting over $156,000 in bribes in exchange for pressuring public officials to extend government contracts aimed at violence intervention. The FBI arrested White on Sunday, and he appeared in court Monday, Aug. 19. White is currently running for reelection to the District Council for a third term following his loss in the 2022 mayoral race, where he gained less than nine percent of the vote.“Because the investigation into the alleged bribery scheme involved contracts that could soon be awarded and other potential official acts that could be taken, our Office took swift steps to address the alleged crimes we were investigating,” said U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves.The FBI Washington Field Office, IRS Criminal Investigation Washington Field Office, D.C. Office of the Inspector General and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia are all handling the ongoing investigation.

 

  • On Aug. 17, a man was severely beaten by employees of the Dupont Circle Shake Shack. According to a public incident report, the incident is being investigated as a Simple Assault with an Anti Gay Hate motivation. Christian Dingus, the man who was assaulted, alleges that the attack began after his partner kissed him inside the restaurant. No arrests have yet been made. 

 

  • On Aug. 18, at 12:40 a.m., a suspect made unwanted sexual contact with a victim walking around 2600 Woodley Place NW. The victim was uninjured and the suspect, a 5’8″ black male in his 30s, fled the scene. 

 

  • On Thursday, Aug. 15 a 15-year-old male was arrested in connection with two burglaries made in the Woodley Park neighborhood in July. 

 

  • On Thursday, Aug. 15 at 3 a.m., multiple suspects forcibly entered a building at 1300 Wisconsin Avenue, taking property and fleeing the scene. 

 

  • On Sunday, Aug. 11, at approximately 12:40 a.m., a victim was walking home in the 2700 block of 29th Street NW when a suspect tackled her and made unwanted sexual contact. He then fled the scene. The individual, described as a Black man in his 20s or 30s, 5’7” and with a heavy build, was wearing dark clothing and a hooded sweatshirt..
