Weekend Roundup: Sept. 5-8


Now that Labor Day has come and gone, the busy fall season is in full swing. Enjoy concerts at Wolf Trap and the Kennedy Center, spend the weekend at Mount Vernon, celebrate lacrosse on the National Mall and more. Enjoy your weekend!

See Julieta Venegas at Wolf Trap
Grammy Award-winning Latin artist Julieta Venegas will be at Wolf Trap’s Filene Center Saturday night. NPR called her most recent album “Tu historia” tender and comforting and about “embracing your past and wearing your mistakes like a badge of honor.” Ximena Sariñana, a Grammy-nominated singer, will open the show. Young Artists Honor James Baldwin at Strathmore

Students from Howard University’s Department of Theatre Arts will perform scenes from James Baldwin’s dramatic works “The Amen Corner” and “Blues for Mister Charlie.” The scenes will be directed by Dr. Khalid Y. Long of Howard University. Also, The Youth Poets of DIALECT of Prince George’s County will celebrate Baldwin’s 100th birthday with documentary screenings, book readings and panel discussions. Also at Strathmore: See Craig Walsh’s “Monuments: Forces of Nature”
A free outdoor exhibit on Strathmore’s North Bethesda campus, “Monuments: Forces of Nature,” opens September 6 and will be open dusk to 10 p.m. through October 6 (weather permitting). Monuments will celebrate selected individuals through large-scale, nighttime projected portraits onto live trees. More information can be found here.

“The Comeuppance,” A Co-Production with the Wilma Theater” Premieres at Woolly Mammoth
Beginning Sunday through October 6, visit Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company to see a show about a group of people who reconnect on the night of their 20-year high school reunion. The group, self-named the “Multi-Ethnic Reject Group,” pregame in Prince George’s County, Maryland and end up having to face the past while looking forward to an unknown future. Don’t Miss No Trick Pony at The Kennedy Center

Amy K. Bormet’s “No Trick Pony,” a D.C.-based power trio, will be at The Kennedy Center’s River Pavilion Friday at 7 p.m. The group includes Amy K. Bormet on keyboard and voice, Keith Butler, Jr. on drums and Brian Settles on tenor sax. The group is known for their unique sounds and Bormet’s abilities to incorporate song, poetry, melody and harmonies with contributions from Butler and Settles. Spend the Weekend at Mount Vernon
On Saturday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., visit Mount Vernon for their Fall Plant and Garden Sale to shop for seasonal color, heirloom plants, perennials, trees and shrubs. There will be a “General’s Choice” line that features plants grown on the estate. More information can be found here.

Also, on Saturday from 2-5 p.m., try a George Washington Whiskey Tasting. Guests can sample three distilled spirits made using 18th century distilling methods and techniques. There will also be opportunities to tour the Distillery and Gristmill. More information can be found here.

Finally, the Ninth Annual George Washington Patriot Run will be Sunday. While the 5K option is sold out, there are still spots open in the 10K. Run along scenic views of the George Washington Parkway, Potomac River and Mount Vernon. The Finish Festival includes music, food and delicious fresh-baked bread from Half Crown Bakehouse (and a free beer for each runner of age!). More information can be found here.

Dance Your Heart Out at The Yards
The retro dance party “Back to the Yards” returns Friday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Visit Yards Park in your best neon outfit and enjoy plenty of ‘80s and ‘90s hits. There will be craft opportunities, glow giveaways, glitter tattoos, a photo booth and more. More information on the event can be found here. Note: the event is free, but registration is encouraged.

Celebrate Women in Sports Saturday at The Wharf
From noon to 8 p.m., head to The Wharf to watch the U.S. Open women’s finals on the big screen, learn basic tennis on a mini court, try out golf simulators, enjoy live music and more. There will also be two panel discussions hosted by sports journalist Jemele Hill. More information on the event can be found here.

Washington Capitals, CityCenterDC Celebrate 50 Years
The Washington Capitals will be taking over CityCenterDC’s Palmer Alley to celebrate their upcoming 50th anniversary season. Palmer Alley will be transformed into Caps Central with pucks, hockey sticks and more. The takeover marks the first time a sports team will take over the alley. The free public event will be Friday from 12:30-2 p.m. and Caps owner Ted Leonsis, current player Martin Fehervary and alums Karl Alzner and Mike Green will be at the unveiling for photos and autographs with fans. Check Out One Lacrosse Gathering Celebration on The National Mall
On September 7, The President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition and the National Fitness Foundation, along with Council member Ben Jacobs of Osage Nation, are hosting a “One Lacrosse Gathering Foundation” on the National Mall. The event will include youth clinics, skill-building, and community games all in celebration of lacrosse (often called America’s original game).
