Weekend Roundup, September 12-15


Another lovely fall weekend is upon us! This time, don’t miss James Taylor at Wolf Trap, a Colonial Market and Fair at Mount Vernon, Georgetown’s Catbird celebrating 20 years. And salute the completion of the World War I Memorial, beginning on Friday evening.

Tonight: Natural Disaster Prep Movie Night and Training with D.C.’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency
This free event, which begins at 5:30 p.m., will be at the Georgetown Capital One Café Community Room at 3150 M St. NW. “Folk Art is Fine Art: Divining Beauty Opens at Amy Kaslow Gallery”
The fourth annual showcase of the world’s premier creatives opens this evening at Amy Kaslow Gallery in Bethesda. The artists featured created work using natural and found materials scavenged from war zones, urban areas, deserts, stressed rainforests and more. This evening, Saturday and Sunday, don’t miss the icon James Taylor and his All-Star Band at Wolf Trap. Ever since he released a self-titled debut album in 1968, Taylor has made himself a household name for his songwriting and timeless tunes like “How Sweet It Is” and “Fire and Rain.” More information on how to get tickets can be found here.

Timothy Shriver to Appear at Planet Word

Don’t miss Chairman of the Board of the Special Olympics Timothy Shriver, Ph.D., who will be speaking at Planet Word this Friday at 6:30 p.m. Shriver will present on The Dignity Index, an eight-point scale that scores speech along a scale from contempt to dignity. Don’t Miss the Rachmaninoff Festival at Strathmore

Kicking off the National Philharmonic’s 40th anniversary season is Maestro Joseph Young, who takes the stage for his first appearance as guest conductor. Celebrate the Genius of American Composers with the NSO

The National Symphony Orchestra’s “American Masters: Eugene Rogers Conducts Carlos Simon/Dan Harder, Aaron Copland & Jessie Montgomery will be performed Saturday evening at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. Visit Mount Vernon for a Colonial Market and Fair

Check out Mount Vernon’s 12 acres of an 18th century marketplace this weekend (Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.). Colonial artisans will be selling traditional handcrafted food and goods and there will be live music from the colonial era. Families can play 18th-century games on the bowling green, and artists will be demonstrating period crafting techniques too. More information can be found here.

Fete the Completion of the National World War I Memorial in D.C.
The general public is invited to attend the First Illumination Ceremony of the National World War I Memorial this weekend. The ceremony will be at the adjacent Freedom Plaza, at 1325 Pennsylvania Ave. NW. A new, 25-ton, 60-foot-long monumental bronze sculpture by Sabin Howard will be unveiled. The ceremony will also include performances by the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” a bugle corps in World War I uniforms, and a candle-lighting. More information can be found here.

ARTECHOUSE, famous for its colorful, immersive experiences, is unveiling their newest, which will explore the vast ocean. The exhibit is developed in collaboration with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), and will examine our emotional connection to the ocean’s realm and our efforts to protect our planet.
