Chefs Unite for a LA Fire Victims Benefit

Local chefs are uniting in support of Los Angeles fire victims this evening. The Duck & The Peach restaurant, inspired by California cuisine, is bringing together a team of local chefs for a wildfire support dinner to benefit World Central Kitchen and the work they’re doing on the ground in LA. Mount Vernon is Displaying Washington’s Inaugural Suit
Beginning tomorrow, Mount Vernon is displaying George Washington’s inaugural suit. The display, which is incredibly fragile and rarely sees the light of day, will accompany a viewing of some of Washington’s 18th presidential documents. There are also plans for special events with presidential experts and a meet-and-greet with President Washington Friday through Sunday. More information on the weekend’s events can be found here.

The Washington National Opera’s 12th Season of “American Opera Initiative” Premieres

This Saturday at 7 and 9 p.m. in the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater, the Washington National Opera presents its 12th season of the American Opera Initiative, a program to commission, develop and present new American operas. The premiere of 20-minute operas includes “Tati,” “Cry, Wolf,” and “Mud Girl.” After their debut at the Kennedy Center, the trio of operas will head to New York City. Visit the Anacostia Community Museum’s “A Bold and Beautiful Vision: A Century of Black Arts Education in Washington, D.C. 1900-2000
The Anacostia Community Museum’s current exhibit on Black arts education includes original artworks, rare video footage and more. See artist Alma Thomas’s paintbrushes and a lifelike marionette that William Buckner made with his local high school students, among other priceless pieces. Now through March 23, see studio-based and documentary photos from Samantha Box, a Bronx-based artist. Box’s works are seen together for the first time and evoke conversations around nationality, race, class and more. More information on the exhibit can be found here.

Attend the MLK Peace Parade on Saturday

Honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Saturday for the 20th Annual Peace Walk and Parade. This year, the parade will be indoors, along with a wellness fair, at the Entertainment and Sports Arena at 1100 Oak Dr. SE. This year’s theme is “Commit to the Noble Struggle for Equal Rights.” More information on the event can be found here.

There’s a “National Day of Action” Protest on Inauguration Day
On Inauguration Day at 11 a.m., protesters are planning a “National Day of Action.” According to their website, the organizers are calling for “defeating Trump’s extreme right billionaire agenda,” and are fighting back for the future of our planet, immigrants’ rights, women’s rights and more. There’s a Unique Opportunity in the Neighborhood on Sunday
Georgetown Lutheran is hosting a unique opportunity this Sunday to join them on a trip up the scaffolding of their bell tower for a special view of Georgetown and to learn about historic Georgetown in a brand new way.
