One of D.C.’s hottest summer events was back this year. The “Best of Washington,” which is put on by the Washingtonian Magazine, happened at the National Building Museum on July 24. This event was designed to celebrate the vibrant food scene in Washington, D.C., it included over 65 of the most popular restaurants.
The grand entry way of the Building Museum was filled with crowds, as everyone wanted to try some of D.C.’s most popular eateries. Over 60 vendors were represented at the event, all of which were featured in the Washingtonian’s list of best places to eat in D.C. This event featured small plates, of one of two items for each restaurant, for example mini tacos from DC Vegan.
One popular vendor at the event was Caruso’s Grocery, located on 14th Street SE. They were serving a variety of the pasta types that they serve with pesto, cheese and tomatoes. Another popular spot was Maydan, which offered beet borani with pita. Maydan is located near Columbia Heights, and they are inspired by the vibrant flavors of the Middle East, North Africa and the Caucasus. This vibrancy was very evident with the bright purple dip that was served at the “Best of Washington” event. This event also featured several different Michelin star winners, including Oyster Oyster, a vegetarian restaurant in Shaw.
This event was focused not only on showcasing the unique food and culture, but it also benefited the World Central Kitchen, with a portion of the ticket sales going to them. The World Central Kitchen, started by D.C.’s own José Andrés, focuses on providing food, especially comfort food, for areas devastated by crisis.
