Weekend Roundup: The Dog Days of Summer Are Here


Now that we’re well into August, it’s time to relish into the quietest month of summer. Enjoy more outdoor movies at the Kennedy Center’s REACH, Moveius Contemporary Ballet at the National Portrait Gallery, the country’s biggest whiskey tasting and much more. Enjoy the dog days of summer!

‘Walk the Line’ at The REACH
The Kennedy Center’s REACH outdoor film series continues with the 2005 movie “Walk the Line” starring Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix. Films begin at sundown or around 8:30 p.m. Registration is encouraged, as is checking the website on the day of screening to make sure there are no cancellations or location changes. Don’t Miss a Performance at The National Portrait Gallery by Moveius Contemporary Ballet
National Portrait Gallery’s choreographer-in-residence Diana Movius will be performing an original contemporary ballet performance inspired by the museum’s “Star Power: Photographs from Hollywood’s Golden Age by George Hurrell” exhibit. Movius is the founder and artistic director of Moveius Contemporary Ballet and Dance Loft on 14. More information on how to register for the event can be found here.

The 2nd Annual Big Bloom Festival is Saturday

Strathmore and the Good Hope Neighborhood Recreation Center are hosting the second Big Bloom Festival at the Good Hope Neighborhood Recreation Center in Silver Spring. There will be live music, food trucks, moon bounces and community resources too. More information on the event can be found here.

The Nation’s Biggest Whiskey Tasting Tour Stops in D.C. Saturday

Whiskies of the World, the country’s largest whiskey tasting tour is coming to Hook Hall Saturday at 6 p.m. There will be the opportunity for guests to test rare whiskies and sip old favorites too. There will be over 150 varieties available from single malts to scotch to bourbons. If you buy a VIP ticket, you’ll get access to the event 45 minutes early. More information can be found here.

Want to Sing with the Children’s Chorus of Washington?
This Saturday, spend time with the Children’s Chorus of Washington at either one of the two campuses at 4201 Albemarle St. NW or 222 M St. NW to make some music and meet new friends. The Strawberry Soireé at President Lincoln’s College is This Weekend

Saturday from 6:30-10:30 p.m. at President Lincoln’s Cottage on Rock Creek Church Rd. NW, enjoy an evening inspired by First Lady Mary Lincoln’s love of strawberries and entertaining. DC Social Collective will be partnering with the Cottage for a “Strawberry Soireé” garden party for young professionals to network and enjoy a bit of history too. More information can be found here.

Last Chance for “Uncanny”
The exhibit “Uncanny” at the National Museum of Women in the Arts closes on Sunday. The exhibit is organized around themes of unsafe spaces, surreal imaginings and includes paintings, sculptures, photos, video art and more. Featured artists are Louise Bourgeois, Leonora Carrington, Ann Hamilton, Fabiola Jean-Louis and others. More information can be found here.
