Beginning August 21, “Hold the Light,” a Light Remedies photo art exhibit to celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day, will be on view at Gallery 16TEN in Georgetown.
“Hold the Light is to bring the community together, give encouragement to Ukraine and to ourselves that light is more powerful than darkness,” said Alla Rogers, a Georgetowner of Ukrainian descent who is the director of Alla Rogers Art Services. “It’s a metaphor for the actual exhibition.”

The production of the exhibit was done in Ukraine under war conditions. The city where the work was produced was under a bombing, Rogers said, and it was very difficult to get the art out of the country. The pieces just arrived days ago.
“It has become an effort of many, starting with cleaning a little creek near 495 highway with my close Polish friend Agata and thinking of peace of mind and peace in the world, holding Ukraine close to our hearts,” said Olha Onyshko, the artist featured in the exhibit.
“Olha’s work is about light, and she photographs light and spectral images, light that separates into spectral color,” Rogers said. “She then creates collages from them and those collages are printed onto plexiglass, which allows light to pass through them.”
Guests at the show will see collages made from photographs of light and then printed onto a background that allows that allows light to pass through the image.

At the exhibit, Onyshko and Rogers will both be there, and Rogers will be saying some introductory words.
“It’s not just for Georgetown, but as a community, we can celebrate holding the light together,” Rogers said.
