Shakespeare Still Slays at the 83rd Golden Globes

The 83rd Annual Golden Globe Awards kicked off this year’s awards show season with a laid-back telecast hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, who returned for a second year.

The show proved Shakespeare is and always will be cool, with the film “Hamnet” winning two awards, including best drama and best actress in a drama (Jessie Buckley). It was also nominated for best director, best screenplay, best supporting actor and best original score. The movie was produced by Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes and tells the tale of Shakespeare and his wife Agnes, who celebrate the birth of their son Hamnet, who later dies at a young age and inspires “Hamlet.”

Hollywood darling Timothée Chalamet, 30, racked up yet another award for his role in “Marty Supreme.” Believe it or not, this was his first Golden Globe. He thanked his partner, Kylie Jenner (yes that Kylie Jenner) during his speech. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez’s “Only Murders in the Building” lost out for Best Comedy yet again, this time to Seth Rogen’s “The Studio,” which was only fitting for what “The Studio” is about.

Fresh off Emmy wins, first-year drama “The Pitt” took home best drama series and Noah Wyle snagged best male actor in a TV drama series. Perhaps the only one cheated from the series, which is set in a Pittsburgh hospital loosely based on a real-life one, was Katherine LaNasa, who plays head nurse Dana Evans. LaNasa won an Emmy for the role and deserved the Golden Globe.

Evidently, I should finally listen to my almost six-year-old nephew to stream “KPop Demon Hunters,” who won best animated movie and best original song for the earworm “Golden.” It’s on my list, Chris!

Best dressed cast was the group from “Sinners,” the horror/action Southern gothic masterpiece directed by Ryan Coogler. The movie took home two awards, including Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Original Score for its hauntingly poignant music.

Finally, another newer award earned was best podcast. “Good Hang” with Amy Poehler earned that award, which is greatly deserved. If you aren’t listening to Poehler’s podcast, it’s a true breath of fresh air in this chaotic world. The very first episode alone had me in stitches, and was so relatable, reminding me of chatting with my own friends via Facetime.
