“Dream Wedding” at the Arts Club

FABUM, a non-profit arts organization, recently presented “Dream Wedding,” an immersive, walk-through performance experience that is part of its Dolce Revolution Project series.  Guests moved from the courtyard through the historic Arts Club of Washington, where each room was a unique, repeating scene within the bride’s subconscious.  Afterwards, a special Dolce Revolution party at the nearby, newly renovated Melrose Hotel celebrated the show and FABUM’s continued commitment to producing original performance work in DC that promotes self-realization and explores human nature.

Capella Hotel Hosts The Washington Ballet

Georgetown’s luxurious Capella Hotel hosted friends of The Washington Ballet (TWB) on June 24 at a small reception on the rooftop deck normally reserved for hotel guests. TWB Artistic Director said the Ballet was thrilled to be in partnership with Capella counting them “family members.” The “British Invasion Bash” reception saluted the March 2014 program of Trey McIntyre’s A Day in the Life set to classic Beatles tunes and Rooster by Christopher Bruce, a “Rock Ballet” that showcases the sounds of The Rolling Stones. Unmasked: Georgetown Gala Takes Over the Embassy of Italy

In this “Year of Italian Culture in the U.S.,” the Citizens Association of Georgetown chose the Italian
Embassy as its fitting venue for “Venetian Carnivale: A Masked Ball” on Oct. 18, as it honored
Herb and Patrice Miller who have been instrumental to the community through the development
of Georgetown Park, the renewal of Washington Harbour and elsewhere. For the first time, the black tie event of
elegantly masked guests was followed by an after-party as deejay Adrian Loving upped the beat for
dancing until 1 a.m. Live auction items included a scavenger hunt dinner in Georgetown, Ermenegildo

At Arena Stage: de Pizan HonorsNovember 6, 2013

On Oct. 9, the National Women?s History Museum bestowed the third annual de Pizan Honors ?honoring women from the past and present who have shaped history.? NWHM President and CEO Joan Wrages spoke at Arena Stage of the continuing hope to make this the first women?s history museum in a nation?s capital. The Henry Blackwell award went to Ken Burns for his PBS production on Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. Other awardees included Phylicia Rashad and Washington?s own Denyce Graves. It was duly noted, as concerns the future museum, ?If the Egyptians had to have the plans passed by Congress, there might not be pyramids.?

The Smithsonian Women?s Committee produced the Craft2Wear show and sale of wearable art
at the National Building Museum Oct. 25 to 27. The Advance Chance Party gave an early glimpse
of the clothing, jewelry and accessories for women and men showcased by 50 exhibitors previously
juried into Smithsonian Craft Shows. Carolyn L. E. Benesh, co-editor of Ornament Magazine,
served as honorary chair.

Malmaison Celebrates a Real Grand Opening

A nice blend of grand opening party-goers were treated to the tastes, sounds and look of the Popals’ latest restaurant creation, Malmaison, at 34th and K, Oct. 15.

Down at the Georgetown waterfront, the restaurant has been open and active for a few months already. As Zubair Popal mentioned in a message, “I know, I know,” there have been several parties already, but this was the real deal for the new hot spot.

Other restaurants by the Popal family include Cafe Bonaparte on Wisconsin Avenue and Napoleon Bistro on Columbia Road. The multi-tasking Malmaison serves breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as being available for special events and meetings. It is named after French Empress Josephine’s estate outside Paris, and its original name means something like “bad” or “ill-fated house.” Well, in a different time and space, the new incarnation seems happily situated. After all, there is nothing mal about this Malmaison.

Elizabeth McGovern Honored

The theme of this year’s Oct. 6 Harman Center for the Arts Annual Gala was “Everything British” and
indeed it was from Noel Coward’s finest to a rousing finale by a Beatles tribute band. Artistic Director
Michael Kahn remarked, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all rewrite our lives as musical comedy?”
Multi-talented actress Elizabeth McGovern, best known for her work in Downtown Abbey, was
presented with the William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theatre. Following the program guests

Pre-Knock Out Abuse

On Sept. 30, Saks Fifth Avenue, Park Hyatt Washington and D.C. magazine hosted a reception at the
hotel where acclaimed stylist and author Lauren A. Rothman presented the must-have fall fashion
trends to benefit Knock Out Abuse, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary at a benefit dinner and
dance at the Ritz-Carlton on Nov. 14. Gina Adams of FedEx Corporation will serve as gala chair;
Senator Kristen Gillibrand will be this year’s honoree; CNN’s Wolf Blitzer will the auctioneer and

Cabaret Barroco

GALA Hispanic Theatre celebrated the world premiere of Cabaret Barroco, Interludes of Spain’s Golden Age, at Noche de Gala on Sept, 14. Executive Director Rebecca Medrano said the production was the theatre’s fifth collaboration with the Embassy of Spain. Representatives from the Embassy of Spain, the Ambassador of Mexico and Chairman of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Judith Terra were in attendance. GALA Hispanic Theatre preserves and promotes Latino arts and culture and shares this rich Hispanic heritage through its diverse performing arts and education programs, engaging the community in a dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives.
