Profs & Pints DC: Feminist Foreign Policy

February 23, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm UTC+0

$2 – $12.

Profs and Pints DC presents: “Feminist Foreign Policy,” a look at a promising approach to bettering the world, with Shirley Graham, director of the Gender Equality Initiative in International Affairs at George Washington University.

Why does gender equality matter to national and international security? A lot, as it turns out. Learn how in this talk by Dr. Shirley Graham, a leading expert in the subject who will discuss the role of feminist international relations theory in broadening out understandings of national security to include human security and gender relations.

She’ll give us a thorough understanding of feminist foreign policy, which is a feminist intersectionality approach to foreign policy that aims to disrupt patriarchal, racist, colonial, male dominated power structures. It prioritizes peace, gender equality, and environmental integrity and allocates significant resources to achieve this goal. Devoted to the promotion and protection of the human rights of all, it specifically focuses on marginalized groups such as women and girls, people of color, LGBTQAI+ people, and indigenous populations. It applies this approach across all of its levers of influence—development, defense, diplomacy, trade, and sometimes immigration.

Dr. Graham also will look at the evolution of global gender policy and its impact on changing societal norms. She’ll discuss a series of recent United Nations Security Council resolutions that focus on women’s participation in peace and security and are calling on nation states to urgently take on leadership roles in transforming cultures that marginalize and discriminate against women and girls.

Then we will take a look at the countries who have adopted feminist foreign policies—including Sweden, Spain, France, Mexico, and Canada—and the progress they’re making and the questions their efforts raise.

She’ll conclude by taking a look at how the US is advancing gender equality in its foreign policy and at the challenges it is facing in doing so. (Advance tickets: $12.
