Weekend Roundup, Nov. 22 – 26
By November 22, 2023 0 1026
•Enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday weekend with plenty of fun things in store, including ZooLights at the National Zoo, a tree lighting at CityCenterDC, the world’s biggest Christmas light maze, plenty of sports, and if you prefer to stay close to home, Georgetown’s getting its very own Christmas tree. Happy Thanksgiving!
Light Yards Shines at The Yards DC
Now through January 7, visit The Yards neighborhood for an interactive light installation. The swinging bells are back this year too, due to their popularity. The five 13-foot-tall bells play a jingle as you swing and provide a fun photo op. In addition to the interactive lights, there are plans for a holiday cocktail competition and for kids, The Polar Express-themed “Light Yards Express.” More information on the event can be found here.
See Cirque du Soleil at the Hippodrome
Beginning November 24, don’t miss Cirque du Soleil’s very first holiday show, based on the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (known colloquially as “’Twas the Night Before Christmas”). The show runs now through December 3 in Baltimore at the Hippodrome Theatre. Lines from the poem inspired the performance troupe’s show, which is about a jaded young girl who rediscovers the magic of the holiday season. Ticket information here.
The Magic of ‘Enchant Christmas’ is Back
The magical winter wonderland known as Enchant Christmas is back at Nationals Park Friday. Through December 31, the ballpark will be transformed into all the delight the holiday season brings — the world’s biggest Christmas light maze, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, an ice-skating trail, seasonal food and beverages, and VIP opportunities. Take it from someone who’s attended the event — even the air smells like cinnamon, nutmeg and pine. Ticket information can be found here.
ZooLights Returns in All its Twinkling Glory
The family tradition ZooLights at the Smithsonian National Zoo returns Nov. 24 for its 15th year. The extravaganza will run for 23 select nights from 5 to 9 p.m. (Sundays until 8 p.m.) and include over a half million environmentally friendly LED lights. Visitors can check out illuminated lanterns depicting oceans, deserts, polar habitats and more. There will also be live music and plenty of seasonal treats. More information on the event can be found here.
Get “Swept Away” at Arena Stage
Beginning Saturday through Dec. 30, Arena Stage is hosting “Swept Away.” Based on a book by John Logan and music and lyrics by The Avett Brothers (aka America’s biggest roots band, according to Rolling Stone), the show is (literally) easy to get swept up in. Four survivors of a shipwreck off the coast of New Bedford, Massachusetts, face a reckoning: just how far will they go to stay alive? Ticket information here.
Tree Lighting at CityCenterDC
The annual CityCenterDC tree lighting is Saturday at 6 p.m. The free event also celebrates the luxury retail hub’s 10 years in business. The majestic 75-foot tree will be lighted, along with a live performance by The Revels and other family-friendly activities. More information on the event can be found here.
Love Sports? This is Your Weekend!
If you’d like to take in a game or two this long weekend, you’re in luck. This evening, the Washington Capitals play the Buffalo Sabres, followed by the Edmonton Oilers on Friday. Georgetown University basketball takes on Jackson State Saturday. More information on all games can be found here.
Looking forward…
Georgetown is Getting a Christmas Tree
Georgetown Main Street has announced a new addition to our community’s holiday celebrations: an 18-foot-tall, pre-lit, Douglas fir tree. It will be displayed at the base of Book Hill Park beginning the week of Nov. 27.
The Four Seasons’ Chalets Return
Debuting Monday, Bourbon Steak’s patio transforms into festive chalets. In partnership with Scotch whisky brand The Macallan, don’t miss some cozy time in one of the three custom-built chalets that will feature exclusive Macallan pours paired with seasonal offerings on Bourbon Steak’s menu. We’re personally looking forward to the Macallan hot chocolate, topped with Macallan milk foam, marshmallows, a chocolate tree and edible gold leaf, marshmallow twigs and a sprinkling of cinnamon dust. Yum! More information on the chalets can be found here.
