Georgetown BID Honors Pâtisserie Poupon, Sets Up Parasol Share

At this year’s annual meeting of the Georgetown Business Improvement District, held June 14 at the Sequoia Restaurant at Washington Harbour, members reviewed 2015 statistics and financial reports, appointed new board members and recognized outgoing board members. To start out the meeting, BID treasurer Jay Freedman went over the statement of activities, noting a $313,095 change in net assets over the prior year.

Following the financial review, BID board president Aba Kwawu introduced each of the newly appointed members. New members, representatives of different Georgetown businesses and organizations, include Bill Starrels (ANC 2E), Bob vom Eigen (Citizens Association of Georgetown), Cecelia Browning (House of Sweden), Max Berry (Max N. Berry, Esq.), Regina Knox Woods (Georgetown University Hospital) and Georgetowner Publisher Sonya Bernhardt (Georgetown Business Association).

Several awards were presented. The Georgetown BID Community Leadership Award was given to Ruth Poupon of Pâtisserie Poupon on Wisconsin Avenue, who was selected for her outstanding service to the community. The Clean Team was also recognized, with all members acknowledged and special recognition given to Clean Team Ambassador of the Year Mike Rogers.

Real estate, both commercial and residential, is on the rise throughout D.C., it was reported. New residential units are in the works, including 85 units in Georgetown, 222 units in West End and a staggering 1,316 units in Rosslyn.

For a fun new way to shop this summer, consumers can look forward to the BID’s Georgetown Parasol Share program. A thousand custom-branded nylon parasols will be placed in businesses across Georgetown in an effort to embrace the sharing economy. Shoppers will be able to “Use a parasol to shop and stroll, then drop it off when it’s time to roll!”

Users of this unique protection against the sun are encouraged to share the experience with their friends on social media by using the hashtags #GeorgetownParasolShare and #BeatTheHeat.
