D.C.’s Tallest Tree Is Centerpiece of CityCenterDC’s Holiday Display (photos)

CityCenterDC kicked off the holiday season with the lighting of the District of Columbia’s largest Christmas tree on Saturday, Nov. 26. The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, D.C., provided a musical backdrop and stiltwalkers dressed as toy soldiers entertained children. On hand were Ward 2 Council member Jack Evans, News 4 WRC-TV anchor Eun Yang, Deputy Mayor Brian Kenner and Timothy R. Lowery, general manager of the mixed-use complex.

The 70-foot fir is topped with a dazzling manzanita starburst, six feet in diameter with 16 arms, as well as 4,525 ornaments adorned with 30,000 six-by-six-inch handcrafted silver leaves. In addition, the 5,200 LED lamps on the starburst and 150,800 LED lamps around the tree will help light the night. The Palmer Alley overhead holiday display, designed by D.C.-based Swatchroom, stretches three city blocks and features a 360-degree visual experience and several 25-foot reindeer. With more than 400 ornaments hanging in the space, it is one of the largest site-specific installations in the city.
