South Moon Under to Rise March 1; More Spring Debuts

South Moon Under, opened in 1968 by Frank Gunion as a surf shack in Ocean City, Maryland, will open its 29th location — its first in the nation’s capital — on March 1 at 1065 Wisconsin Ave. NW. The space previously held a Nadeau Furniture With a Soul location. Before that: a Ralph Lauren Rugby store and, earlier, Houston’s Restaurant.

The Annapolis-headquartered fashion retailer will take up 1,800 square feet of selling space in the more than 100-year-old building — with historic touches like exposed brick but with an airy, up-to-date design in tune with its seashore vibe.

Chief Executive Officer Michael Smith and Chief Creative Officer Patricia Darrow Smith, a husband-and-wife team, own South Moon Under, which recently opened three locations in Atlanta. Both formerly worked for White House-Black Market retail stores. Nearby South Moon Under stores are in Arlington, Virginia, and Bethesda, Maryland. Plans call for more stores across the nation.

Brands carried by South Moon Under include apparel (Ali & Jay, Black Halo Eberjey, Greylin, Show Me Your Mumu), jewelry (Elizabeth and James, Jules Smith, Kendra Scott, Love Poppy, Soko), shoes (Free People, Schutz, Splendid) and bags (Rebecca Minkoff).

Other soon-to-open spots in Georgetown include: Amazon Books at 3040 M St. NW, Bluestone Lane coffee (next to Frye Boots, across the street from South Moon Under), Capital One Cafe at Wisconsin Avenue and M Street NW, Church restaurant in the Georgetown Park retail complex, Guapo’s Mexican restaurant at Washington Harbour, Insomnia Cookies at 3204 O St. NW and Reverie restaurant at 3210 Grace St. NW (with the Wine Outlet in the same building).
