The Auction Block: Asia Week 2018

Bonhams

Gilt Copper Alloy Shakyamuni Buddha Figure

Khasa Malla, 13th–14th c.

Estimate: $1.2 million – $1.6 million

Auction Date: March 19

Part of Bonhams’ Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Art sale, this Buddha is one of the largest bronzes attributed to the Khasa Malla kingdom of western Tibet and Nepal. His formidable frame is softened by the fluidity of the sheer, clinging sanghati and the delicate engraving of vines and rice-grain patterns on the double hemlines.

In 1950, Sayed Haider Raza left for Paris to study at the École nationale des Beaux-Arts. There, he was exposed to the Post-Impressionist artists.
