The Auction Block: Asia Week 2018

Gilt Copper Alloy Shakyamuni Buddha Figure

Khasa Malla, 13th–14th c.

Estimate: $1.2 million – $1.6 million

Auction Date: March 19

Part of Bonhams’ Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Art sale, this Buddha is one of the largest bronzes attributed to the Khasa Malla kingdom of western Tibet and Nepal. His formidable frame is softened by the fluidity of the sheer, clinging sanghati and the delicate engraving of vines and rice-grain patterns on the double hemlines.

“Ville Provençale,” 1956
Sayed Haider Raza (1922–2016)

Estimate Upon Request (over $1 million)

Auction Date: March 19

In 1950, Sayed Haider Raza left for Paris to study at the École nationale des Beaux-Arts. There, he was exposed to the Post-Impressionist artists. Raza’s work is a hybridization of Parisian post-war modernism and the vibrancy and direct color treatment of a Rajput miniature. This oil is part of the Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art sale at Sotheby’s.
