The 2019 DC Jazz Festival will shoot the works with free afternoon and evening shows on Saturday and Sunday at the Wharf. Synetic Theater’s ‘Richard III’
Synetic Theater, 1800 S. Bell St. in Arlington, Virginia, presents “Richard III” as the 14th installment in Paata Tsikurishvili’s Wordless Shakespeare Series. Relying on stunning physicality and powerful visuals, the production explores the king’s Machiavellian rise to power, highlighting the terrifying extremes made possible through the abuse of modern technology. DC JazzFest: Nicole Saphos Trio
On Thursday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m., as part of DC JazzFest’s Jazz in the ’Hoods series, a jazz trio featuring bassist Nicole Saphos, winner of the Exceptional Bass Soloist Award from the Essentially Ellington Competition, will perform on the grounds of Tudor Place Historic House and Garden, 1644 31st St. NW. Capitol Hill Film Classic
Also on Thursday, June 13, from 7 to 10 p.m., the Miracle Theatre, 535 8th St. SE, will host the finals of the Capitol Hill Film Classic, a knockout-style competition in which locally produced short films vie with the best in the world. ‘Love’s Labor’s Lost’ at the Folger
Folger Theatre, 201 East Capitol St. SE, presents Shakespeare’s comedy “Love’s Labor’s Lost,” in which a young king and his three friends renounce the company of women for three years in favor of scholarly pursuits. However, their pact is immediately jeopardized when the Princess of France and her three companions arrive unexpectedly. Final performances are: Friday, June 14, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, June 15, at 2 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, June 16, at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $27 to $85. Artist Talk: Julian Rosefeldt
On Friday, June 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hirshhorn Museum, Independence Avenue at 7th Street SW, Berlin-based artist Julian Rosefeldt will join Hirshhorn chief curator Stéphane Aquin to discuss the process behind his practice of making visually striking and politically charged multi-channel video installations, including “Manifesto,” in which Cate Blanchett portrays characters whose dialogue draws from the writings of Futurists, Dadaists, Fluxus artists, Suprematists, Situationists, Dogme 95 and other 20th-century artist groups. Star Kitchen at Gypsy Sally’s
On Friday, June 14, at 9 p.m., psychedelic jam band Star Kitchen will perform at Gypsy Sally’s, 3401 K St. NW. The foursome’s departure into funk and soul began with the chance encounter of bassist Marc Brownstein of the Disco Biscuits and keyboardist Danny Mayer of the Erik Krasno Band at a Little League game. DC JazzFest at the Wharf
Showcasing the area’s top jazz musicians, Grammy-winning visiting artists and youth ensembles, along with breathtaking views of the Anacostia River, DC JazzFest at the Wharf will take place on Saturday, June 15, and Sunday, June 16, at 760 Maine Ave. SW from 2 to 10 p.m. This year’s lineup includes: the Joshua Redman Quartet with Aaron Goldberg, Michael Franks, Terri Lyne Carrington & Social Science, Joey Alexander, Sharón Clark, Anat Cohen, Ralph Peterson’s GenNext Big Band, the Olli Soikkeli Trio and Girls in Airports. International Day of Yoga and Indian Food Festival
The Embassy of India and Friends of Yoga will celebrate the fifth year of the International Day of Yoga on Sunday, June 16, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on the grounds of the Washington Monument, 1600 Constitution Ave. NW. The morning will include yoga, meditation, talks and workshops. All ages are welcome and prior knowledge of yoga is not essential. Inscape Chamber Orchestra Plays Hindemith
