Police Report: D.C. Homicide Rate Up 15 Percent, Neighborhood Incidents

•Here’s our neighborhood’s latest police and crime news gathered from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD):
Sept. 6 – Arrest: Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Knife) on the unit block of H Street NW. The assault occurred at 6:20 p.m. on Sept. 5 during an argument between the suspect and the victim who was taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Sept. 6 – Robbery Investigation: Currently underway for an incident on the 2600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The suspect is described as being a black male wearing all black and was seen fleeing in a light blue SUV with unknown tags.
Sept. 5 – Assault: A Georgetown student reported a Physical Assault at the Henie Village dormitory at 3700 O St. NW and [the case] is currently pending investigation.
Sept. 4 – Shootings: Three people were shot dead and three more suffered non-life-threatening injuries due to gunfire at around 7:30 p.m. on the 600 block of Longfellow Street NW. MPD is on the search for a black four-door Honda Accord in connection with the triple homicide. This incident took this year’s homicide count in the district to 144 and up 15 percent compared to this time last year.
Sept. 4 – Aggravated Assault: Reported by a student at the Georgetown student housing center, Village A, located at 3773 Prospect St. NW. The case is currently pending investigation.
Sept. 2 – Bicycle Theft: Reported by a Georgetown student close to the Rafik B. Hariri Building on campus located at 37th and O Streets, NW.
Sept. 1 – Sexual Assault: Reported by a student on campus at Residence Hall in the vicinity of 37th and O Streets, NW.
Aug. 30 – Restaurant Closure: At the August ANC 2E meeting, MPD reported a temporary closure of Charcoal Town located at 1027 31st St. NW. The restaurant was found operating without a liquor license and recently has had noise complaints and crime in and around the establishment’s property. Two armed robberies were reported where a $13,000 watch was taken at gunpoint inside the restaurant, and a carjacking and jewelry theft occurred on the property’s exterior.
Aug. 30 – Bicycle Theft: Reported by a student on campus at Alumni Square on the 3700 block of O Street NW.
Aug. 24-28 – ATM Robberies: Six ATM kidnapping robberies have been reported in mostly NW D.C. MPD is searching for a group of men who are forcing people into a vehicle to [coerce them into withdrawing] money from ATM machines. The victims are usually alone at night and are approached by the assailants who are brandishing a weapon. One victim reported the group approached him while he was in a bike lane and forced him at gunpoint into the backseat of a vehicle with a shirt over his head. The victim also noted that they burned him with a lighter. The locations and dates occurred as follows: Aug. 24 at the 1300 block of Corcoran Street NW, Aug. 25 at the 5200 block of 14th Street NW, Aug. 26 at the corner of 14th and Allison Streets NW, Aug. 28 at the 1200 block of 10th Street NW, Aug. 28 at the 500 block of 13th Street NE, and one other on Aug. 28 at the 700 block of Kenyon Street NW. MPD reported that one victim was physically assaulted when trying to run away and also believes the perpetrators are responsible for all six crimes.
Aug. 20 – Armed Carjacking: At 3:07 a.m. an armed carjacking occurred at the 3100 block of South St. NW. MPD detectives are seeking public assistance to identify and locate suspects who fled in the stolen vehicle. The unharmed victim complied with the suspects who were armed with handguns.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is encouraging those with knowledge of any of the unsolved incidents listed above to NOT take action but call (202) 727-9099 or text an anonymous tip to the department at 50411. MPD is offering up to a $10,000 reward to anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest and conviction of someone who commits a violent crime.
