Weekend Round Up, Jan. 20 – 23


We made it to another weekend! This time around, enjoy the Washington Auto Show at the Convention Center back in person. A fascinating new exhibit has come to Artechouse. For wine afficionados, you might sample this full-bodied lecture on the wines of South Africa. The Wizards play at home this weekend, the Anthem hosts comedian Aziz Ansari and you can still catch Winter Restaurant Week in Georgetown through this Sunday. 

Vroom Vroom! The Washington Auto Show is Back (In-Person) This Friday 

Beginning this Friday through Jan. 30, the Washington Auto Show returns to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The 10-day extravaganza is the largest public show in D.C. and is known as one of the country’s top five auto shows. Over 600 new models from over 35 manufacturers will be featured. Don’t forget, in accordance with city mandates, all guests age 12+ will be required to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination and a corresponding ID. Masks are also required. See a Fascinating New Exhibit at Artechouse 

A new exhibit at Artechouse, a home for innovative and experiential art, was unveiled this week. The exhibit “Transient: Impermanent Paintings” was originally composed as a live performance. It shows a series of audiovisual paintings made by the artist Quayola in concert with generative algorithms. Technology is used as a lens to explore music for a 21st century audience. You’ll never see anything like it! “Transient: Impermanent Paintings” runs January 17 through March 6. More on the exhibit can be found here. 

Sip South African Wines at an Evening Lecture and Seminar

Smithsonian Associates is featuring an evening lecture this Friday from 6-8 p.m. all about South African wines. The evening, led by sommelier Erik Segelbaum, includes a curated personal tasting kit to pick up from The Eastern Wine Bar in Eastern Market. Guests will receive a Zoom link to log into the event. Segelbaum will be appearing with Jim Clarke, ambassador for Wines of South Africa in the U.S. More on the event can be found here. 

The Washington Wizards Play the Boston Celtics at Home This weekend 

If you’re a hoops fan, the Wizards take on the Celtics at Capital One Arena this Sunday at 3:30 p.m. With their starting-5 back and healthy, The Wizards had a nail- biter this week versus the NBA no. 3-ranked Brooklyn Nets, 119-118. Tickets for the game can be found here. 

Make Last-Minute Guffawing Plans with Comedian Aziz Ansari 

Do you still need plans for this weekend? Comedian Aziz Ansari of “Parks and Recreation” fame is stopping by The Anthem for his “Last Minute Tour.” The show starts Friday evening at 7 p.m. More information on tickets can be found here.

Restaurant Week Ends This Sunday 

Support local restaurants with the District’s annual Winter Restaurant Week. Lunches and brunches are priced at $25 and dinners are $40-$55. Plenty of takeout options are available for those who are uncomfortable dining in person.
