Construction Update on Hospital Pavilion at MedStar Georgetown

Regina Knox Woods, Vice President, Government Affairs for the District of Columbia, MedStar Health, sent out the following update on the construction along 3800 Reservoir Road NW for MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s new Medical/Surgical Pavilion.

Excavation: Excavation and support of excavation in the Lot B area (between St. Mary’s Hall and Reservoir Road) is underway and will continue for approximately three months.

Tower Cranes: All three tower cranes remain in service. These three cranes serve an important function in the ongoing construction as they move heavy construction materials around the site and create efficiencies in the overall construction activity. The first tower crane removal at the south end of the site is scheduled for Feb. 11 – 14. A reminder email with details will be sent to the community in advance.

Below-Ground Concrete Structure: Work to build out the below-ground concrete structure, which includes the underground parking area, is complete in the primary site footprint. The below grade structure in Lot B is scheduled to be constructed in the spring and summer of 2022.

Above-Ground Structure: The structure of the pavilion is fully erected and the installation of the exterior façade and windows will continue through the first half of 2022.

Mechanical / Electrical / Plumbing: Work to install the infrastructure for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing service to the pavilion continues as scheduled. Electrical energization is in process and will continue during the first half of 2022, and equipment testing and startup will begin in the spring of 2022.

DC Water Service Infrastructure: Work to reinforce and upgrade the existing DC Water service piping within the pavilion construction site is substantially complete.

Entrance 1, Lot A, Lot B: Moderate activity. All ground support beams are installed. Below-ground concrete work is complete in Lot A and some utility service work continues. Excavation of Lot B is underway.

West Perimeter Road: Medium activity. Mobilization will start on Jan. 18 with excavation and pile installation across from Yates Field House beginning in early February. The roadway will remain open for the project’s duration.

The 477,000 square foot Medical/Surgical Pavilion will house 156 private patient rooms, a new Emergency Department, 31 operating rooms, a rooftop helipad with direct access to the Emergency Room, and three levels of underground parking. The proposed plan more than doubles the existing green space, providing for open, attractive landscaping that offers the immediate community an appealing and charming landscape.

As a long-standing member of the community, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital takes great pride in being a good neighbor and minimizing disruptions during construction of the Medical/Surgical Pavilion. We appreciate your patience as we construct a world class facility that will provide the community with enhanced access to the world class care we currently provide.
