Georgetown Main Street Brings Back Christmas Tree

“Georgetown’s first community Christmas tree has arrived!” Rachel Shank, executive director of Georgetown Main Street, told The Georgetowner on Nov. 27. “Georgetown’s small business community has long dreamt of a holiday centerpiece to bring festivity to the corridor. This year, we’re thrilled to see that dream come to life.”

“It’s a really big 18-foot tall Douglas fir pre-lit tree that will stand at the bottom of Book Hill Park,” Shank announced at the organization’s Coffee and Community breakfast meeting on Nov. 16. “It will be put in place in the little Book Hill Plaza at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Reservoir Road by Thursday.”

The official public inaugural tree lighting ceremony will take place at 6 p.m., Dec. 6, and will include holiday carols from Capital Blend and sweet treats from the Friends of Book Hill Park. The event will be held in conjunction with the Glow night art lights event and Shopping Night sponsored by the Georgetown Business Improvement District that will take place in the commercial district around Wisconsin Avenue and M Street, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., that same day.

The Main Street Christmas tree is a commercial one intended to be used annually. For this first year, it will be decorated in simple traditional soft white lights and a tree topper, Shank said. It will be lighted as soon as it is in position, and neighbors will be invited to celebrate.

“This tree marks a milestone in our collective efforts to create a more vibrant and magical atmosphere in upper Georgetown,” according to Georgetown Main Street. The organization “has made a significant commitment, investing $10,000 towards acquiring, storing and maintaining this magnificent tree for the coming years. Donations from the community were also sought to help bring the project to fruition. “Every donation, regardless of size, is immensely appreciated,” Shrank said.

A “Gift From the Community” sign will be placed next to the tree acknowledging the names of families and businesses whose support made this endeavor possible. “The resounding support from our community has been instrumental, and we’re elated that this year, we can finally make this cherished wish a reality,” Shank said.

Also for the festive season, the Georgetown Cookie Tour is set for noon to 4 p.m, Saturday, Dec. 9. GMS partners with local bakeries and small retailers to encourage a “tour” of Georgetown. Visit Georgetownmainstreet.com for details.
